You are invited to attend an important community meeting
next Tuesday evening in Lac du Flambeau about Underage Drinking. This
meeting
will also serve as our monthly Lakeland Area Community Meeting. I've
attached
the agenda and a poster if you would like to put some up in your area
or school
or send home with students.
The Lac du Flambeau
Community will be one of hundreds of
communities nationwide that will hold an Underage Drinking Community
Meeting on
Tuesday April 1, 2008 to discuss and raise awareness about the issue of
underage drinking. According to the most recent Positive Alternatives
Coalition
Drug Free Community Survey (December 2007) given to over 700 6th-8th
grade students from across Vilas County, 40% of these students first
drank
alcohol before the age of 14. According to this survey, our local youth
report
underage alcohol use at levels higher than both the national and state
averages, a compelling reason to come together, understand the issues
and
explore solutions.
The Positive
Alternatives Coalition (PAC) and the Lac du
Flambeau Wisconsin Tribal Cooperative Agreement Prevention Project
(WITCAPP)
Coalition, in collaboration with the Federal Governments Interagency
Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking, are
co-sponsoring the event. Parents, teachers, officials, youth and other
community members from across the Lakeland area who attend will be
educated
about the impact that underage drinking has on our whole community.
Participants will learn about the “legal costs” from local law
enforcement and judges as well as the “human cost” from a local
emergency room Doctor. A local specialist will also discuss new
research on the
effects of alcohol on the teenage brain-a perspective that all parents
of
adolescents must understand. Finally, we will be hearing from local
youth who
will share their ideas for helping youth make better choices in their
lives.
The meeting will be held
from 5:30pm-8:00pm at the Lac du
Flambeau Wellness Center, located on the east side of Hwy 47 about 1/2
mile
south of the LdF Grade school.
