We had a great turnout for the first Community Wide Prevention Plan meeting, 33 people total.  We started with a dinner, where people were able to make connections from the community.  Sue Wolfe, representing PAC, welcomed everyone to the meeting, gave a brief history of how PAC began and invited anyone interested to join.  Erv Teichmiller shared some opening thoughts on our community.  He had asked some young people what he should share with the group for this evening.  One girl said, “Tell them we’re only doing what the adults in the community are doing.”  One boy said, “Everybody will rebel.”  Erv concluded with saying that we need to involve the kids and that the answer to our concerns lies with them.  Kim Wasserburger shared statistics from the past several years at the high school for levels of drug and alcohol use.  The numbers basically remained the same over the whole span, even during years when more AODA programs were in place.  Sue Allen was the facilitator for the evening.  She began her time by showing a video on the impact of alcohol, the great prevalence of alcohol advertising and ways that other communities have taken steps to bring about change.  After the video, Sue guided the group into a discussion on responses to the video and brainstorming ideas for our community.  Our time ran short and it seemed that we had just gotten into the discussion when it was time to wrap up the meeting.  We are hoping to continue this discussion by having more meetings like this one, but moving them to other communities in the area.  Several people from this meeting indicated that they were interested in continuing to be a part of moving this conversation forward.  If you are interested in this, please contact Bob Kovar at bkovar@glitc.org  Thank you to all who took the time to come and to share.
