·
There were 16 people at the meeting this evening.
· The
meeting began with introductions around the circle. Some people
included a mini-report in their introduction:
o Concern about lack of awareness of fetal alcohol effect in schools
o Good report from freshmen Choice group after first week of school
o Counselor looking forward to working with ILI in the school
· Bob
Kovar explained the history of the community meetings to Jim Bouche,
LUHS principal. He also shared the groups desire to be a resource
for the high school.
· Charlotte
Hockings told the story of the students who burned Waswaagoning and the
restorative process that Nick and Charlotte offered to the students.
o Charlotte extended an invitation for Jim Bouche and groups from LUHS to come take a tour.
o Nick and Charlotte are looking for ways to fund making copies of the DVD
o It was suggested to approach the curriculum committees and school boards with the DVD.
o This could be a good time for brining in the DVD to
the schools with the curriculum coordinators working on aligning the
districts.
· Jim Bouche
gave an introduction of himself, where he had taught and how he came to
be at LUHS. He shared some of his goals for the school and steps
that he is taking to get to know the community.
o He is purposefully out walking the halls and the start and end of the school day.
o He hopes to visit each of the 72 classes once during the first semester.
o He believes that every student has the right to be
educated with the best means possible. And that LUHS staff need
to know the students and where they come from to provide the best
education.
o He has met with Victoria Doud, Tribal President and
discussed meeting monthly with the Lac du Flambeau Education committee.
o He is looking for ways to get out into the communities to learn.
· LUHS School Board Update: below
o A
proposal is on the table to rotate school board meetings to each of the
communities, possibly meeting at the grade schools. This would
provide the board members a chance to see the communities, the schools
and for the schools to share with the board.
o The board is looking at ways to involve the public
more at meetings by opening up more times for questions and comments.
o They are talking about creating a handout or
brochure to provide more information to the public who attend the
meetings.
o They are talking about moving the start time to
later in the evening. Meetings currently start at 5pm, which
makes it harder for the public to be involved.
· Comments and Questions directed to Jim Bouche
o Suggestion to have an orientation for new teachers to LUHS
o How can we help you to understand the uniqueness of our community?
· Free AODA Presentation
o Rick
Lodholz offered to do an AODA Presentation for any group or school for
free. He presented at an earlier Community Meeting on the effects
of alcohol on the teenage brain. He has been a facilitator at
town hall meetings and does several different AODA presentations.
If you would like to have a free presentation, you can contact him at:

· Funding available for Prevention:
o Bob
Kovar shared that there are many resources currently available for
prevention. Several coalitions in the area have funding through
grants, and the high school just received the PEP grant.
· WI Youth Voice Update:
o The ILI
Staff are working with Jim Bouche to arrange for LUHS students to be
involved in area coalitions and decision making groups. There is
a small grant for us to pilot this program in our area.
· Intercultural Leadership Initiative Update:
o ILI
Staff are working with the social studies teachers to introduce new
sections with experiential activities. The teachers are also

Tribal Government.
