Lakeland Area Community Meetings

Opportunity for Positive Change through Communication
The Intercultural Leadership Initiative (ILI) staff and Positive Alternatives Coalition (PAC) are pleased to invite you to a series of community meetings. These meetings are facilitated by ILI staff and others from our community and will focus on celebrating our diverse local perspectives. The purpose of these meetings is to encourage the community-at-large to come together to discuss a wide range of ideas, strategies and “best practices” that we would like our schools and communties to employ in the effort to keep our children healthy and vibrant through prevention of violence, substance abuse, prejudice and other community risk factors.

As a result of this process, we will develop a strategic Community Wide Prevention Plan and Resolution.  This document will represent the values and wishes of the people of the Lakeland Area and our collective conscience on what good prevention means for our youth and families.
We will ask people in positions of leadership in our schools, county and Tribal governments, and communities to sanction these community ideas and create the authority to insure implementation of this Plan. We will ask everyone in our community to ratify this Plan so there is a degree of accountability.

Another part of this effort includes an inventory of available programs, services and resources and their capacity to serve our community needs. This process will help us identify gaps in needs and services as well as funding sources and opportunities.

We are searching for a respectful and caring conversation that will:
  • Identify the issues and concerns of the community by empowering participants the opportunity to speak if they are interested.
  • Empower youth to speak for themselves.
  • Introduce to the public "best practices" and other positive strategies for their consideration and discussion.
  • Explore positive solutions to identified issues and concerns.
  • Help everyone understand and respect the importance of cultural differences, competency and sensitivity.
  • Develop consensus.
Most importantly, we will continue the process of communicating and working together to find solutions for ways to overcome our obstacles, resolve our differences, and solve our problems.

Funding for this program is being provided by the Positive Alternatives Coalition, a Drug Free Community coalition funded under federal grant. PAC is closely aligned with the Intercultural Leadership Initiative (ILI), who is also helping sponsor these meetings.  There is no cost for participants.

We've had wonderful turnout for our first meetings. There's more information below about how you can become involved and help. This is a living, breathing process. We will make mistakes and, if we truly honor one another, we will help each other learn how to do things better.
