2008-2009 All ILI Activity Period #1 12/17/08 9:46am-10:04am LUHS ILI Students: (F) 7, (S) 8, (Jr.) 6, (Sr.) 5 ILI Staff: Craig Kerr, Alice McFarlane, Ernie St. Germaine, and Matt White We had an all ILI meeting today because we wanted to get a picture for the yearbook. All the students came in and we welcomed them and then we had them get themselves organized for a group picture. We had a good time with this and had our picture taken a number of times. Then some students decided to leave to attend holiday parties in their homeroom. We continued with some activities to get acquainted. Some of the younger and older students don’t know each other. The first activity was called “Known and Unknown.” This activity introduces people who do not know one another. The students enjoyed this and at the end of the activity we were all joined together! Then we went onto “Mingle, Mingle.” This is an activity where people randomly connect and introduce themselves and learn about each other. It is a fun activity for people to get introduced. The students enjoyed interacting and meeting new peope. Next all ILI April 29th Bob Kovar,
Project Director Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2008-2009 Freshman/Sophomore Activity Period #5 12/10/08 9:46-10:04 LUHS ILI Students: (F) 8, (S) 13 ILI Staff: Craig Kerr, Ernie St. Germaine, and Matt White We started by welcoming everyone and letting them know that we were thankful that they chose to be there today. Today’s activity plan was for a physically active session. Many of our students, and for that matter community members, do not know what Christmas will bring this year. With that in mind we wanted the students to be able to release some of this anxiety through movement. The first activity we did was a variation on “partner tag.” We changed the rules to include that you have to make the movement your partner was making, so that it actually turned into “follow-the-leader partner tag.” The students liked the addition and really “ham’med” it up! The second activity we did was “Everybody Is It.” This activity is also very physically active and the students really enjoyed it. Next, we did “Partner Everyone Is It.” This activity was great to see the students having to work together and communicate their strategy to each other. Finally, we had enough time for a requested round of “Jolly Green Giant.” These activities were meant for a fun and productive way for students to release some of the stress that they may be feeling due to the uncertainties of the upcoming holidays. Please keep all those who may be having a tougher holiday season, for whatever reason, in your thoughts and hearts. Next meeting Jan 14. Bob

He also talked to the students about the Lakeland Area Community Meeting tonight where they will be talking about youth issues and would like their input. Craig showed the students the list of issues the Junior/Senior students wanted to talk to Mr. Bouche about and asked if these were the same issues that they would like to talk to him about as well. The students said that they were. He then asked if there were other issues they would like to discuss and they said that they couldn’t think of any. This was an active group of students who hadn’t met in a number of weeks because of different things going on in the school. Craig asked the students get into groups of three and we did the “chariot war” activity. The students did a great job working together and having a good time at the same time. A student requested another activity and so we moved onto the “Jolly Green Giant.” The students enjoyed a positive outlet for the energy that they entered the room with. With a couple of rounds of “Jolly Green Giant” it was time to go. The next meeting is Nov. 25 Bob

Intercultural Leadership Initiative Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2008-2009 Freshman/Sophomore Activity Period #4 10/22/08 9:46-10:04 LUHS ILI Students: (F) 6, (S) 8 ILI Staff: Craig Kerr, Alice McFarlane, and Matt White Today we had a small group of students because it was also Winter Sport Sign-up Day during activity period. Craig welcomed the group and let them know that he was thankful that they decided to come. He let them know that he did not invite Mr. Bouche to meet with them today because of the sports sign-up. Then he introduced a new activity. It is called “Chariot War.” I know that it sounds ferocious, but there was a lot of activity and much laughter. Craig asked the students to get into groups of three. Two people faced each other and grabbed wrists. These people were the “horses.” The other person was the chariot driver and had a bandana tucked in the back of their shirt. When I said “GO!,” the students “rode” around in their chariots trying to grab each other’s “tail.” However, only the horses could grab the tail. The students had to work together and communicate where they wanted to go and who they wanted to go after. It was a fun way to see them work as a team and communicate in an effective manner. After everyone had a chance to be the “chariot driver,” Craig told the students about the upcoming Middle School Dance that will benefit the Food Pantry. Many of the students were interested in helping. More information will be coming out in the next few weeks. Finally, we straightened the mats on the floor because the gymnastics floor is being prepared to be put down. Next meeting November 12 Bob

Intercultural Leadership Initiative Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2008-2009 Freshman/Sophomore Activity Period #3 9:46-10:04 10/8/08 LUHS ILI Students: (F) 5, (S) 14 ILI Staff: Craig Kerr, Alice McFarlane, and Ernie St. Germaine We had a good group of students today. Craig welcomed the students and let them know how important they are to the program. Since some of the students had not been to a meeting yet this year Craig repeated to the students that we only are able to work with the grade school students two times during the school year this year and that we are not able to work with 8th grade at all during the school day. The student’s reactions were strong. They did not understand why the students only had two meetings and were upset that we were not able to work with the 8th grade students during the school day at all. Two students voiced that they didn’t understand why that would be because 8th grade is the most important year for ILI. Two freshman students said that they would not have as many friends as they have if it weren’t for 8th grade ILI. Craig thanked the students for sharing their honest and heartfelt opinions and thoughts. Ernie talked to the students about the value and power of the circle. He talked to the students about when we are in a circle that everyone has an equal voice and that their voices are important and that we need to hear what they have to say. Craig asked the students if they would like to talk with Mr. Bouche, the principal of LUHS, about how they feel and they all agreed that they would like to talk with him. Craig told the students that he would talk with Mr. Bouche and invite him to the next freshman and sophomore meeting and they were really excited about the opportunity to talk with him. After our discussion we had time for one energetic activity. The students enjoyed it and it was time to go. Next meeting is Oct. 22 Bob

Intercultural Leadership Initiative Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2008 – 2009 ILI/LUHS Social Studies Pilot 9-24-08 Mr. Syverson: World Culture Today ILI staff supported Mike Syverson’s World Culture class with activities that link to the Chapter 2 concept of “order.” The reason “order” was picked as a concept is because Chapter 2 covers the beginning of ancient river civilizations. This is the time that tribes of people who were nomadic began to settle in one location and began to develop “civilizations.” With these civilizations on water routes came trade with other peoples and the need to communicate across cultural and language barriers. The activities Craig facilitated were based on the idea of how we communicate and learn to communicate in new ways. Also as civilizations became more formal they began to have to get “organized.” The second two activities addressed organization and how different people organize differently and how civilizations organized differently forming different cultures and cultural norms. Also they developed written languages mostly in the forms of hieroglyphics and pictographs. The activities that we did were: “Name Lineup”; this is an activity where the students are instructed to line up according to the first letter of their first name. All of the classes did a great job with this. Once that idea was well established from the first activity we went to a more difficult challenge, “Silent Birthday Lineup” this has the same principles as the last activity except that they cannot speak. The classes had a bit more difficult time with this activity, but all did well. After these activities, we processed with the students about which activity was harder and which activity was easier and why. We discussed the river civilizations and related the ideas of communication to how trade was conducted. Then we went on to two other activities using M&M’s. The students received a handful of M&M’s and we asked not to eat them. Then, they were asked to “order” their M&M’s. This brought frustration to some and joy to others because of the ambiguousness of the instructions. After the students were done, we asked them to explain why they had ordered their M&M’s the way they did. Then, we asked the students to make a picture with the M&M’s about themselves. Most students really enjoyed themselves with this project. When everyone was done we asked for volunteers to share their stories. Finally we tied that to how ancient civilizations told their stories.—Hieroglyphics, pictographs, etc. This pilot project is a collaborative partnership between ILI staff and LUHS staff to bring ILI activities and approach into the classrooms of the school in a way that helps LUHS staff enhance the delivery of curricular ideas in a manner that engages a variety of learning styles, building relationships in the process. Intercultural Leadership Initiative Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2008 -2009 Freshman and Sophomore Activity Period #2 9/24/08 9:46 – 10:04 LUHS ILI Students: 5 (F), 3 (F), 10 ILI Staff: Alice McFarlane, Craig Kerr, Ernie St. Germaine, and Matt White Today we had a great group of students. They came in with a great energy and excitement to be there. Craig welcomed everyone and made a few announcements. He explained to them that ILI was up for an award through Harvard University. They were a pleased. Craig and Matt went on to explain that it was really what they were doing that was up for an award. We let them know how proud of them we were. With the shortened period, we only had a few minutes left after the announcements for an activity. Because we had some new faces in our group we decided to do an activity that helps the students remember each other’s names, “Have you ever?” The next meeting will be Oct. 8 Bob

Intercultural Leadership Initiative Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2008-2009 Homeroom Activity Period 9:46-10:04am LUHS Freshmen/Sophomore Session #1 09-10-08 LUHS ILI Students: Freshmen: 9. Sophomores: 9 ILI Staff: Craig Kerr, Ernie St. Germaine, Alice McFarlane, Matt White. Our first session of the year! LUHS activity periods have been shortened this year to about 20 minutes, down from 30 minutes previous years, so we need to be creative and informative in the short time we have. The students came in very excited and comfortable with each other. We took a little time to mingle and check on interest amongst the students for being grade school mentors. Then the group got into a circle and Craig welcomed everyone and explained what ILI hopes to do each Wednesday. Then the group jumped into an activity called “Mingle, mingle”. The object is to end up connected to other people at random and introduce one another and answer a question together. The group then switched to an activity called “Toe tag” to learn each others names. This activity was led by one of the Sophomore students who has been serving as a mentor with the grade schools. Then the bell rang and they were off. It was a very fun and relaxed time of getting introduced to one another and sharing the start to a new year full of Possibilities. Bob
