Intercultural Leadership Initiative
2009-2010 Freshmen/Sophomore Activity Period #3 10/14/09 9:46-10:04 LUHS ILI Students: (F) 7, (S) 8, (Jr.) 5, (Sr.) 1 ILI Staff: Ernie St. Germaine, Matt White, and Craig Kerr We had the students sit in a circle and welcomed them and thanked them for coming today. We had a very energetic group today so we began with an activity that gets them moving around and also gives them an opportunity to get to know others in the group. The students not only were able to get out some of their energy, they connected with others in the group that they may not know very well. The next activity we did was active as well. This activity involved pairs using their communication skills and coordination to keep from becoming “it”. The students had difficulty at first but as the activity progressed they began to communicate and coordinate themselves better. They all enjoyed themselves and left with smiles on their faces. The time always seems to go so fast. Next meeting Oct. 28. Intercultural Leadership Initiative ILI Students: (F) 13, (S) 11 (Jr.) 1 We had a great group of students today! There were a lot of new faces and we were happy to see them. We started by welcoming everyone and thanking them for coming. Craig explained a few expectations for our time together and we got right into the activities. Many of these students do not know one another so we began by getting to know each other’s names. We did this in an active way through an activity call “Name Clap” and the students enjoyed the activity and getting to know one another. The next activity we did had the students introduce themselves to someone they didn’t know. Then they introduced the person they just met to someone they know really well. This is done through movement and placing your hands on the shoulders of the people you don’t know and head of the people you do know. As we have said before, words often lack the ability to translate the experience. (Or maybe it is just the writer?!) Just imagine a standing version of twister. Today it was great to see the students jump right into this activity and enjoy the opportunity to meet new people and get outside their comfort zones! The final activity we did was an old favorite, “Toe Tag.” The group split into two circles and had a seat on the floor. As soon as I told the students what we were doing a number of students said, “I know this one!!” And others said, “I like this one!!” It was great because we will be taking a number of these students to mentor the 4th graders next week, and we will want them to run these types of name activities. The students enjoyed getting to know everyone in there circle and as usual it was time to go before we knew it. Next meeting 10/7/09.2009-2010 Freshmen/Sophomore Activity Period #1 9/9/09 9:46-10:04 LUHS ILI Students: (F) 2, (S) 9, (Jr.) 4 ILI Staff: Ernie St. Germaine and Craig Kerr Today was our first ILI activity period of the year! The students and staff were excited to be back together. We began by welcoming everyone back and making a few announcements about the expectations for activity period and upcoming sessions. After the announcements we got right into the activities. As noted above we only had a couple of freshmen attending, so we went right into activities. As we get more freshmen attending we will change to get everyone to get to know one another. The students interacted very well and enjoyed the activities. When Craig asked the students to switch partners during one of the activities, it was great to see no hesitation on the part of the students to grab a new partner and get ready. It may seem like a small thing, however, going outside one’s comfort zone by partnering with someone new is actually a big step. The students continue to lead the way in how we can connect and work with one another. Next session is 9/16/09 |
