Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § The big news this week is that we found out that Wisconsin Rural Partners has chosen ILI as one of Wisconsin's Top Rural Development Initiatives! This is the ninth year they have been giving out these awards and the program is designed to identify, highlight, and share innovative models, practices and programs that have a positive impact on rural Wisconsin communities. We were nominated for this award by Michele LaRock and the Wisconsin Indian Education Board of Directors-the same folks who successfully nominated us last year for the Giraffe Award we received from the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families. We are so deeply honored to be nominated by colleagues we have such high respect for and excited that we have won his recognition! We will go down to Wisconsin Rapids in early June for the awards presentation. Tchii Miigwetch Michele and WIEA! § On Sunday night, we gave a short thank you talk to the North Lakeland Education Foundation at their annual recognition dinner. They have supported ILI with very generous donations the past few years and they asked each grantee to say a few words this year at their dinner. It was a great event! § ILI staff is working on outing together an interactive cd for our proposal of expanding ILI into all of the tribes-pretty cool concept! We want folks to be able to see video, photos and more as they browse themselves to a better understanding of what we do. § We are ready to get our annual year-end surveys out to all ILI parents, teachers and students. We appreciate your helping get as many of these as possible back to us-good evaluation is the best strategy for improving our program. Your feedback is very important to us-thanks in advance for your help in making us better! § On Tuesday we attended the retirement celebration for LUHS Superintendent Mike Dailey at LUHS. It was really nice and we had a chance to publicly thank Mike for his strong advocacy and leadership over the years for getting ILI embedded into the Lakeland area-thanks Mike and we wish you all the best! § We received $250 this week from the Minocqua Noon Rotary Club-they have been wonderful supporters of ILI over the years-thank you! § ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday May 14: LUHS ILI Activity period. Freshman/Sophomore. 9:45am-10:15am. AVW/LdF/MHLT/NLS Middle School Dance LUHS Commons 5/2/08 ILI Dance Volunteers: Kate Kerr, Lisa Phillips, and Sonja Lane ILI Staff: Alice McFarlane, Craig Kerr, and Matt White On Friday night, ILI sponsored a middle school dance at Lakeland Union High School. This dance idea was conceived when LUHS ILI students said that they wanted to go to the Twin Cities to do a service project. To be able to go they were going to have to raise money. They decided that organizing a dance for middle school students would be a great way to raise the money. This is how we came to sponsor this ILI dance. We had about 150+ middle school students attend. The first six high schoolers on the list above did a lot of the planning to make this happen. The next 4 students helped on the night of the dance. This process started with other students involved as well, but because of some bad personal choices they were not able to see the whole project through. We will be working with them to help restore them. The dance started a 6pm and students started to arrive. The DJ—Jamz DJ—had the music going and the students were right in there dancing. When more students arrived he played a number of songs that the students knew the dance moves to, and almost everyone was out on the dance floor. It was awesome to see all the students dancing to the song and having a great time! The DJ was great and had the students engaged the whole night. Through out the dance we raffled off a number of gift certificates and other items that local businesses donated for the dance. We also had Guitar Hero III projected on a wall in the commons for students to play. This was a BIG hit!!! The middle school students had a great time! The high school students did as well and we are very proud of them and the work that they did to put the dance together and see it to the end. The benefit raised over $500. Bob Kovar, Project
