Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week!
§         Our first week in a few weeks without any grade school sessions so we have had some time to catch up. We facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school).
§         On Tuesday, Bob met with Leah VanZile from WPS to discuss ILI and share what we have accomplished with their help since last year. Their foundation is encouraging us to reapply for additional funding which we will do this spring. A professional photographer attended our LUHS ILI After School session on Wednesday to photograph ILI students for their Foundation Annual report which will feature ILI.
§         We heard this week from Kurt Griesemer of the Wisconsin Education Communication Board in Madison. They were considering coming up here to film our LUHS ILI students as part of a youth leadership TV series, but due to financial and logistical issues, they have had to re-evaluate how they determine spending on local/regional/national shoots. Because they would have to dedicate at least 4-5 days in order to cover the story (with full camera and sound crew, producer, project director, food, lodging & travel), they decided we couldn't afford the expense at this time, but would keep the idea on file should things change in the future. We appreciate them considering our project!
§         Bob was asked this week to be a new member of the Alliance For Wisconsin Youth Advisory Council. This is an ad-hoc statewide committee that advises the Wisconsin Dept of Health and Family Services in many decisions related to the Alliance. The Advisory Council is comprised of 15-20 members representing local alliances (of which ILI is one) and state agencies or organizations that are partners with the Alliance in its mission to support community coalitions and youth leadership to prevent youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and to promote overall behavioral health. To learn more about them please see their website: www.allianceforwisconsinyouth.org .
§         We have started working on a grant application to the Ministry Health Care Foundation, through our connection with Howard Young Healthcare Foundation. This application is due in early April but the Letter of Intent is due by March 9.
§         We have officially closed out the ILI 2005-06 budget year. We were able to realize a few thousand dollars more than we thought as we completed this process. It cost us $141,582 last year to run ILI, about $190 per student served. We think we are able to have quite a positive social impact at a very reasonable cost to our community. Thank you all for your support!
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 94 individual members for this year so far, a total of $9328, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6700 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $15000 mark so far this year!
§         ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
§         Wednesday February 28: LUHS ILI Freshman/sophomore Activity Period. LUHS school. 9:45-10:15.
§         Wednesday February 28: After School LUHS ILI session. LUHS school. 3:45-5:45pm.
§         ILI/LUHS After school Learning Center: The after school learning center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00pm in LUHS student services.  Mr Burley, School Counselor, will have student services open on Mondays to work with students preparing for the ACT and other students who would like to come and do schoolwork are also encouraged to be there.
§         ILI/LUHS Transition:
Letters and waivers will be coming out soon to parents for the May 8th grade Transition Day.
§         ILI Volunteers: Please watch for information regarding stuffing envelopes for our year-end parent, teacher and student surveys!
§         ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $208,663 of our $374,055 budget.
§         FOR MORE INFORMATION!!  Please check the ILI website at www.ilileadership.org.

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week!
§         We held the last of our 2nd sessions this week with area 8th grade students on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and today. Our emails out to you have been limited this week because Bob was in Washington DC and it was difficult to email listserv-style from the hotel out there. This week’s session summaries will all be posted by next week on the ILI website if you did not receive them. We also facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school).
§         We were informed by Leah VanZile from Wisconsin Public Service that ILI will be featured in their Foundation Annual Report this year! Howard Young Healthcare Foundation has also featured ILI in their annual report this year and we look forward to getting copies of both to share. Next week WPS will be coming to LUHS to photograph ILI students for their report.
§         ILI staff met this week on Wednesday to continue planning for the 8th grade sessions as well as some important upcoming LUHS ILI opportunities including: volunteering at the Lakeland Loppet Ski Race/overnight the weekend of March 3.

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week!
§         This was a short week due to school and GLITC office closures because of the extreme cold weather. We facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school).
§         We met on Wednesday with Fred Maulson of the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. The Commission is an agency of eleven Ojibwe nations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with off reservation treaty rights to hunt, fish and gather in treaty-ceded lands. It exercises powers delegated by its member tribes. GLIFWC assists its member bands in the implementation of off-reservation treaty seasons and in the protection of treaty rights and the natural resources. GLIFWC provides natural resource management expertise, conservation enforcement, legal and policy analysis, and public information services. We brainstormed ideas with Fred about how we could enlist his expertise to help students understand government-to-government relationships, sovereignty, treaty rights, regulations and law enforcement. We then thought about presenting two views to our students by having Fred partner with his colleagues in equivalent state and federal agencies. We talked about setting up experiences for students so they could understand the similarities and differences between state and tribal natural resource management and enforcement. We even daydreamed about setting up some controversy that the students could try in a mock court, which would give them the additional experience of understanding tribal/state courts and their relationships and approaches to enforcing laws. Lots of good stuff! We will work with Fred and others to start bringing these kinds of experiences to our students.
§         On Thursday we met with Michele LaRock of the Wisconsin Indian Education Association to discuss the upcoming WIEA conference in April that will be held in Lac du Flambeau. UW Professor Patty Loew is bringing a really interesting presentation to the conference called “One Sky, Two Views” which will be an opportunity for students to learn about the heavens from both traditional elder storytellers from tribes all around the region and western scientists, including NASA scientists and even an extra-terrestrial expert! We talked about having a special presentation on Friday evening, April 13. This would be our ILI Culture fair and we would invite students and parents to attend. We talked about serving food, the presentation and even entertainment for youth following ( a dance/concert). We will be working on this over the next few weeks and all ILI students and their families will be notified of the details with a packet we will be sending home with students as we always do prior to the Culture Fair-so keep an eye out for this, it really will be an awesome event!
§         If you want to read about the recent Giraffe Award we received please go to the WIEA link: http://staging.dce.k12.wi.us/wiea/index.php?page=WIEA_Highlights
§         The La Crosse Native American Association and the Native American Hmong Initiative in conjunction with the WI Department of Public Instruction and the UW-La Crosse School of Education is planning the 4th annual Act 31 Teacher Education Symposium (now being called Widening the Circle) March 28-31 at UW-La Crosse. The symposium seeks to be a resource for educators to help them learn how to authenticate materials, infuse curriculum to teach about Wisconsin Native American & Hmong history, culture and critical/multicultural pedagogy to address the problems in education and current issues.  This is an extremely important symposium for educators in Wisconsin.  In light of new racial violence and the proposed Hmong education bill (AB 314), along with Act 31, this symposium becomes even more important for current and future educators to meet the educational standards and goals of the state of Wisconsin, a changing demographic and to be better teachers in an increasingly diverse classroom. If you have any questions regarding the conference please contact:

§         ILI staff met this week on Wednesday-Friday to continue planning for the upcoming 8th grade sessions.
§         We received $200 this week from Northern Tier Uniserv, representing teacher and educational employee unions across northern Wisconsin. Northern Tier UniServ now represents 5 K-8 schools, 20 K-12 schools, 2 union free high schools, 2 CESA 9 units, and 3 Wisconsin technical Colleges. Northern Tier has one of the largest geographic areas for a single UniServ in the state. They have supported us for many years and we are very grateful for their continued support-thank you!
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 94 individual members for this year so far, a total of $9328, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6700 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $15000 mark so far this year!

§         This week we hosted 4 days of 7th grade sessions at Camp Jorn. Each day we had about 20 students. Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week!
§         On Tuesday we hosted session #2 for LdF/NLES ILI 4th grade students. We also facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school).
§         We have compiled all of the comments from last weeks community meeting in Lac du Flambeau and sent those out to all of you. Lots of great comments from which to continue moving the discussion forward. We met with a number of folks and elders from Lac du Flambeau this week to discuss their feelings about the meeting last week, to try and make sure that we are communicating our concerns and ideas with each other. When we bring together people who walk with purpose, they collide with destiny and we believe that can be a really good thing! Lynn Bartling from the Restorative Justice Program has offered to host the next meeting and we have one suggestion of having Lakeland Union High School students perform the dramatic performance about the lockdown and life at LUHS to begin the discussions for the next meeting. We would very much like to hear from you about this, or any other ideas, suggestions, concerns or alternatives you may have. We are looking at March 8 as the next meeting date. Please let us know what you are thinking so we can keep this all moving forward the way you would like to see it move. Thank you J
§         ILI staff met this week to continue planning for the upcoming 7th and 8th grade sessions. We appreciate our school partners willingness to allow us to try a different approach with these students. We will assess how these sessions go to see how everyone feels about us repeating this structure in the spring.
§         Bob went down to Madison on Wednesday where he received a Giraffe Award (for folks who “stick their necks out for children”) from the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families (WCCF) for the work we are all doing in ILI. Michele LaRock, President of the Wisconsin Indian Education Association (WIEA) had nominated Bob and was also there for the ceremony at the Monona Terrace. There were around 500 people there celebrating the 125th anniversary of the WCCF. This is a wonderful organization, check out their website at www.wccf.org and see all the good things they do. Thanks Michele for having such faith in ILI, it was a real honor to receive this award.
§         We received an email from the Lakeland Noon Rotary Club this week to tell us that their Board of Directors have approved a $500 donation to ILI. Thank you so much for your continued support!
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 93 individual members for this year so far, a total of $9220, as well as 13 business members, a total of $6200 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $15000 mark so far this year!
§         ILI In the Media: There was a nice article in the 1/19/07 Lakeland Times about a recent 5th grade ILI session. There is an article in today’s (1/26/07) Lakeland Times about racial issues at the high school. ILI is mentioned as “one of the programs that doesn’t seem to be working” according to Kevin Maulson in the context of decreasing the gap in academic achievement. We would agree with Kevin, and have often said that ILI is not going to have a large impact on graduation rates if we are only able to work with LUHS students 30 minutes every other week as is currently the case. When ILI first came into LUHS in 2000-2001, our pilot group of students met two hours during school each week. All of the students in that group graduated LUHS 4 years later, so we know we can have an impact given the chance. In order to get “more connected” with LUHS students this year, we started the LUHS ILI After School program that meets Wednesday’s after school for 2 hours each week. Students that are involved in this program are definitely on a better track to graduate. ILI staff has spent countless hours building our curriculum and delivery system, we are ready to have a larger impact given the opportunity! Here’s a link to the article.. http://www.lakelandtimes.com/main.asp?SectionID=9&SubSectionID=9&ArticleID=5634&TM=61483.83
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
§         Monday January 29: ILI 7th grade session #2 group #1: All schools. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm.
§         Tuesday January 30: ILI 7th grade session #2 group #2: All schools. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm.
§         Wednesday January 31: LUHS ILI Junior/Senior Activity Period. LUHS school. 9:45-10:15.
§         Wednesday January 31: After School LUHS ILI session. LUHS school. 3:45-5:45pm.
§         Thursday February 1: ILI 7th grade session #2 group #3: All schools. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm.
§         Friday February 2: ILI 7th grade session #2 group #4: All schools. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm.

§         ILI/LUHS Transition:
Letters and waivers will be coming out soon to parents for the May 8th grade Transition Day.

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week!
§         Please note-all of our upcoming sessions are being hosted at Camp Jorn. Students should come prepared to be outside if the weather isn’t too cold, otherwise most of the day they will be inside where its warm.
§         7th and 8th SESSION #2 SCHEDULE: We have received approval of area principals to have our 7th and 8th grade sessions as follows: January 29,30, Feb 1,2 will be 7th grade. Each day there will be 5 students from each of the 4 grade schools attending. 8th grade will be held on February 12,13,15,16-same format.
§         On Monday and Tuesday we hosted session #2 for ILI 6th grade students. We also facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school).
§         LUHS ILI after school students continue to work hard on their dramatic performance that they decided to do after the lockdown in December. We have 4 big whiteboards in the LUHS ILI office and these students have been filling these up with their thoughts, ideas and plans for this performance. It is complex and they are working now to narrow it down to address the issues they feel reflect their feelings. They have also been meeting more often than just Wednesdays-they are obviously quite committed to this process. They will be on an overnight tonight at Camp Nawakwa for some R&R and further discussion. Thank you to Kirby Peterson and Camp Nawakwa for allowing us to stay in their wonderful facility free of charge-thanks from all of us!
§         Tuesday night we had nearly 90 people attend the Community Meeting that we have sent a summary to you.
§         ILI staff met this week all day Thursday and Friday to continue planning for the 7th and 8th grades coming up in a few weeks.
§         Bob went down to the Forest County Potawatomi Community Foundation office at their casino in Milwaukee to meet with RaeJean Kanter and Tom Boelter (Director of the foundation). We had a wonderful meeting, they are really doing some amazing things for youth and education across the entire state of Wisconsin. They are situated to make a huge positive impact and are searching for the right way to do things. This includes setting up programs for gifted students as well as providing for regular conversations regarding Native American philanthropy and leadership. It was really an honor to sit and share our efforts and then listen to how what we are doing could fit into their global vision which is very exciting.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We received $100 in donations from the Friends of ILI campaign this week-thank you all very much!
§         ILI In the Media: We were interviewed last week by Bob Gutsche of the Washington Post. Here is the link to the story that ran this week: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/15/AR2007011501127.html
