2006-2007
Weekly Update
Friday April 27, 2007
Here’s
what has been going on in ILI this week!
§
We facilitated ILI sessions on Monday,Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (7th
grade), Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School
Drama
rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday. A busy but incredibly fulfilling
week! Please note that next week 8th grade ILI
sessions are at LUHS School!!
§
Bob attended the Service
to Science Academy
in Minneapolis
wedneday through Friday this week. ILI was one
of 12 programs from 10 states attending the academy, where each program
received expert advice and guidance on evaluation of their projects. We
had our
own evaluation consultant and received excellent advice on developing
our
evaluation in a culturally competent and appropriate manner-it was
really
exciting. We have some new ideas for involving ILI
volunteers and the community in future decision-making regarding our
evaluation. Plus, we are now going to eligible for a mini-grant of $20k
to
develop a more sophisticated evaluation plan. We also have 2 more
“free” days of consultation services-really a great opportunity for
ILI!
§
On Friday, May 11th,

will include the following activities: a healthy lunch (tacos, salad
bar, etc)
served in the big cafeteria, door prize drawing, educational and
physical
activities (ILI staff will be facilitating ILI activities as one
option),tables
providing wellness information and health risk assessments. You can
visit
classrooms with health-related displays. For more information contact

Wolfe, LdF School at 715-588-3838, ext. 192.
§
The North Lakeland
Education Foundation will be hosting a wonderful event: the 1st
Annual Spring Honors Event on Sunday May 6 at Little Bohemia
Restaurant. The
event will honor long-time NLES
staff that were at the school during the '71-'83 time period that
either had a
long-career at NLES or that stood out for other positive
reasons.
Some of our ILI teachers are going to be
honored and we want to congratulate them on their contributions to the
wellness
of so many students over the years. If you would like to attend please

“best practices” that we would like our schools and communities to
employ in the effort to keep our children healthy and vibrant. Meeting
agenda
will be emailed next week.
§
Literacy Training
Opportunity for Interested Persons-Volunteers
who tutor children in reading and spelling often don’t know how to work
with a child, youth, or adult who lacks even the most basic reading and
spelling skills. This summer the Northern Wisconsin Task Force on
Literacy is sponsoring an intensive (70 hour) two-week training
workshop for
persons interested in tutoring individuals who have moderate to severe
literacy
needs. During the workshop trainees learn how to develop
individualized
lessons plans and personally tutor a child, youth, or adult under the
direct
supervision of experienced “master” teachers. Dates are M-F,
June 18-29. Location is Northland
Pines High School, Eagle River; carpooling
available. Cost is $400; partial to full scholarships
available.

Bob Kovar, Project
Director 2006-2007 Weekly Update Friday April 20, 2007 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week! § Thank you to everyone who attended the Culture Fair last Friday evening at LdF school-what an amazing event! There were close to 300 people who ate a wonderful meal and attended the “One Sky Two Views” show that was put on in partnership with the WIEA conference. The traditional storytellers and scientists were fantastic! Everyone was really engaged and all of it was followed by a powwow in the gym that everyone really enjoyed. § We facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Monday and Tuesday (6th grade), Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School Drama rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday. The highlight of the week was a group of UW-LaCrosse graduate students who visited the area and attended our Wednesday after school ILI session. An amazing group of young people! § On Thursday Bob and Ernie were guests at the 6th-12th grade charter school in Rhinelander-what an amazing concept. It is a project-based school and students choose projects to work on. There is also a regular scope and sequence curriculum-charter schools are “schools within schools”, and this charter school is housed in a school they were closing but it is still part of Rhinelander school district and all of the teachers are Rhinelander school district teachers who moved there from traditional classrooms. Wisconsin DPI is really encouraging these alternative schools with substantial grant monies and some interesting schools have cropped up across the state-like the aeronautical charter school in Oshkosh for example. There are currently 188 charter schools in Wisconsin and the state is hoping for 200 in the near future. What about a “World Culture” 6th-9th charter school in our area? It seems like an amazing opportunity. § On Friday Bob met with Dennis Lipp at Camp Jorn to discuss ILI for next year. Camp Jorn has become our main facility partner and we are working on our use there next year. § We are also in the process of making meetings at each of our partner schools to discuss ILI next year as we do each spring before school ends. § The Tuesday, May 8 Community Wide Prevention Plan meeting will be held at Camp Jorn (will send directions separately shortly) in Manitowish Waters. The meeting will start at 5:30pm, hor’s d’ouevres will once again be provided by PAC at no cost to you-we appreciate you all coming! The purpose of these meetings is to encourage the community-at-large to come together to discuss a wide range of ideas, strategies, protocols and “best practices” that we would like our schools and communities to employ in the effort to keep our children healthy and vibrant. Details of the meeting will be coming out in the next week or so! § We completed and delivered a request for funding to River Valley State Bank this week. § We have started a proposal to submit to the Community Mental Health Foundation. § ILI staff met Wednesday thru Friday planning our upcoming 7th and 8th grade sessions. § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 95 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10353, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6725 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $16000 mark so far this year! § ILI In the Media: There is a nice article about ILI and our community meetings in this months’ Lac du Flambeau News-check it out! Also-in today’s Lakeland Times there is an excellent article about our facilities partner Camp Jorn. You can check it out at http://www.lakelandtimes.com/main.asp?SectionID=14&SubSectionID=14&ArticleID=6061. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Monday April 23: LdF/MHLT/AVW/NLES 7th Grade Session. Group #1 Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. o Tuesday April 24: LdF/MHLT/AVW/NLES 7th Grade Session. Group #2 Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. o Wednesday April 25: LUHS ILI After School Program LUHS school. 1-6pm. Early Release Day o Thursday April 26: LdF/MHLT/AVW/NLES 7th Grade Session. Group #3 Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. o Friday April 27: LdF/MHLT/AVW/NLES 7th Grade Session. Group #4 Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. § ILI/LUHS After school Learning Center: The after school learning center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00pm in LUHS student services. Weekly Update Friday April 13, 2007 Here's what has been going on in ILI this week-Happy Easter! * First, we want to remind you of our 7th Annual ILI Cultural Fair on Friday April 13 from 5:00-10pm at the LdF grade school. The show highlights views and discussions of the night sky from well-known space scientists and traditional storytellers. It should be a great event for the family-we hope to see you all there. * CONGRATULATIONS to LdF ILI 5th Grade student Anakwad Elm-he was awarded the "Outstanding American Indian Student of the Year" by the Wisconsin Indian Education Association. No small feat being among 7000 candidates across Wisconsin! We are all very proud of him-he is a great role model and a real inspiration! There will be a banquet at Lake of the Torches Casino tomorrow night (Saturday) at 5pm to honor him. Way to go Anakwad! Plus a really nice story about him in today's Lakeland Times: http://lakelandtimes.com/main.asp?SectionID=14&SubSectionID=14&ArticleID=6024 * We facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School Drama rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday. Interestingly, a new study has found that theatrical drama is an educational tool in the fight against drug addiction and abuse. Research published in Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention and Policy, showed that after watching Tunnels, a series of six vignettes depicting the effects of alcohol and drug abuse, more than half of the audience left the theatre wanting to get involved directly in drug and alcohol prevention in their homes and communities. Read more... http://cadca.org/CoalitionsOnline/article.asp?id=1475 * The Tuesday, May 8 Community Wide Prevention Plan meeting will be held at Camp Jorn (will send directions separately shortly) in Manitowish Waters. When we started these last September, we promised to move the meetings around the community and have yet to have one in the northern area. The meeting will start at 5:30pm, hor's d'ouevres will once again be provided by PAC at no cost to you-we appreciate you all coming! The purpose of these meetings is to encourage the community-at-large to come together to discuss a wide range of ideas, strategies, protocols and "best practices" that we would like our schools and communities to employ in the effort to keep our children healthy and vibrant. We are working towards developing a "Community Wide Prevention Plan" from these meetings that we will present to parents, school administrators, community and tribal leaders, counselors, social workers, law enforcement and others who play important roles in the development of our youth. The focus of these meeting is on AODA prevention in particular, but we will continue to address issues of racism and equity in our community as these are critically interconnected with AODA issues. This meeting will be action-oriented: we will be asking you to help us put in place the programs, strategies and policies we have discussed into a draft plan. Please come-we need many voices if we are to make sure this Plan addresses everyone's needs. * We finished our grant application to the Ministry Health Care Pooled Fund and a HUGE thanks goes out to Sharon Belknap for her help with this application. * We have started a number of smaller requests to local businesses and foundations. * We are already receiving many of our year-end surveys back-thank you for helping us evaluate our efforts! These annual surveys are compiled as part of our overall evaluation each year, a critical part of our program efforts. * ILI staff met the rest of the day Thursday to discuss a number of student issues and activities. * The "Friends of ILI" membership drive: We received $1000 this week-thank you! We are up to 95 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10353, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6725 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $16000 mark so far this year! * ILI In the Media: There is a nice article about ILI and our community meetings in this months' Lac du Flambeau News-check it out! * Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o

Bob Kovar, Project
Director 2006-2007 Weekly Update Friday April 6, 2007 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-Happy Easter! § First, we want to invite you to attend our 7th Annual ILI Cultural Fair on Friday April 13 from 5:00-10pm at the LdF grade school. A poster is attached to this email with the details. All ILI students and their families can attend for free! Its going to be a great evening with a special viewing of the “One Sky, Two Views” program put together by UW Professor, author and TV host Patty Loew for the Wisconsin Indian Education Assoc. Conference being held in Lac du Flambeau next week. The show highlights views and discussions of the night sky from well-known space scientists and traditional storytellers. It should be a great event for the family-we hope to see you all there. Parents-additional information has been sent home this week with every ILI student so please ask to see the packet they were asked to bring home! It also includes the annual ILI Parent Survey with a stamped return envelope for your convenience to fill out and send back to us as soon as you can. Thanks! § This was a very busy week with our final 5th grade sessions for the year on Monday and Tuesday. We also facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School Drama rehearsals on Thursday. § The good news this week is that ILI has been chosen as one of 12 programs across 10 states to attend the Central CAPT “Service to Science Academy” in Minneapolis on April 26-27. “Central CAPT” stands for the “Central Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies.” The Service to Science initiative is designed to help programs become more evidence-based (sometimes called “research” or “science-based”). They are one of five regional centers funded by the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). CSAP is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Their mission is to bridge research and practice in the field of substance abuse prevention. They do this by providing technical assistance and training, primarily by working with state agencies responsible for prevention. Central CAPT was formed in 1997 because CSAP recognized the distance between the federal government and those who work in the field of substance abuse prevention. They set up five technical assistance and training Centers around the country to help close this distance. They asked each state agency and the agency in the Red Lake Nation responsible for substance abuse prevention to nominate a program to attend the Academy. They received their nominations and then extended invitations to our programs. This opportunity for ILI includes up to 30 hours of additional technical assistance plus an opportunity to competitively apply for grants of up to $30,000 for additional evaluation work! This is an incredible opportunity for ILI and we are very honored to have received this. Thanks to Lou Oppor down in Madison for sending in our nomination! § All of the LUHS ILI students that were in the performance at the Norwood Pines Community Meeting in March received a note from Sen Breske. It was a pamphlet that said "I saw you in the news". On the inside it had his picture and signature and the article picture from the Lakeland Times taped on the inside as well. The kids were really excited to receive them! § We are working on setting up our May 8 meeting-are trying to have the location figured out by next week at the latest. We held the 1st meeting at LUHS, 2nd in Lac du Flambeau, 3rd at Norwood Pines and in the interest of spreading the locations around the community are considering a northern location for this next meeting (possibly Camp Jorn). This next meeting will be an “action plan development” meeting, meaning we will be asking participants to actively match the strategies, ideas, policies and programs we have discussed previously with their specific domain: for example “Parents who host lose the most” AODA prevention program for “Parents”, or “restorative Justice” program and philosophy for “schools”. This will be an important meeting for you to attend-lots of opportunities for input and good discussion! § We are busily working on our grant application to the Ministry Health Care Pooled Fund the whole package is due April 16. § On Thursday, ILI staff and volunteers (Joe and Bev Strauss, Pam Anthony) gathered at GLITC to stuff the year-end envelopes for all of our ILI students, parents and teachers. Each year we send home a year-end letter to parents, a parent survey, a student survey and a teacher survey. We also included this year information about our Annual Culture Fair being held in conjunction with the WIEA conference next week in Lac du Flambeau. These annual surveys are compiled as part of our overall evaluation each year, a critical part of our program efforts. Thanks in advance for getting these surveys back to us as soon as possible! § ILI staff met the rest of the day Thursday to discuss a number of issues and activities. § We received a check from the Vilas County Safe and Stable Families program for $1000. Thank you to them-they have supported us for quite a few years and we truly appreciate it! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 94 individual members for this year so far, a total of $9353, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6725 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $15000 mark so far this year! § ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday April 11: LUHS ILI freshman/sophomore Activity Period. LUHS school. 9:45-10:15. o Wednesday April 11: After School LUHS ILI session. LUHS school. 3:45-5:45pm. o Friday April 13: “One Sky, Two Views” Culture Fair. LdF Grade School. 5:00-10:00pm. § ILI/LUHS After school Learning Center: The after school learning center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00pm in LUHS student services. Mr Burley, School Counselor, will have student services open on Mondays to work with students preparing for the ACT and other students who would like to come and do schoolwork are also encouraged to be there. § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting of the Transition Committee is May 1 from 4-5pm at LUHS Sped Conference room. We will be going over the details of the May 23 Transition Day at this meeting. § ILI Volunteers: THANK YOU for helping stuff envelopes this week !!!!!! § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. There is also going to be a dance-still lots of details to work out! We also talked about working with the Kiwanis Club on their April 7 community service project day. Finally, we had an extended discussion regarding our expectations for students who participated in ILI and as well as our philosophies for dealing with students when issues arise. § On Thursday we received a check for $500 at the Noon Rotary Lunch meeting at Norwood Pines in Minocqua. Director 2006-2007 Weekly Update Friday March 9, 2007 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week! § We facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School Drama rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday. § We hosted the 3rd Community Wide Prevention Plan meeting last night-already sent you an update on that. § We got our Letter of Intent in to Ministry Health Care Pooled Fund for a grant we are hoping we get asked to apply for. Howard Young Health Care submitted a letter of support on our behalf-thank you! § ILI staff and students braved cold temperatures last weekend for the Overnight Retreat and Service Learning expedition to Winter Park and the school forest. A great time was had by all! § We heard this week that our grant application to and subsequent site visit from the Wisconsin Community Fund was well worth our efforts-we have been awarded $7000! Thanks again to the LUHS ILI students whose eloquence and poise, and sense of how to have FUN really made a positive impression on the grant committee visitors we had in January. Thanks WCF for your continued support! § On Thursday we were invited to attend a meeting of the LdF Healing Pathways project for a presentation from the lead researcher from the University of Nebraska on the long-term longitudinal study being done on 7 reservation communities across the upper Midwest and Canada. This is an amazing study where the researchers have found sophisticated ways to measure and correlate substance abuse patterns with such indicators as historical loss, discrimination and enculturation. This is a large study, funded by the National Institute on Mental Health and National Institute on Drug Abuse. The data is incredibly intriguing and one of the hopes from this study, according the group, is to have others use this data to build projects and effect change for tribal youth. § For the third year in a row we have the honor of hosting UW-Madison interns from the Waisman Center Summer Cultural Immersion Experience this coming May for about a month. The goal of the Summer Cultural Immersion Experience is for students to gain exposure to the dynamics of a cultural community that differs from their own culture and background. Through their placements, students gain a higher level of awareness that will assist in developing skills to be more effective working in diverse settings. Students are placed throughout Wisconsin and in the past, we have had some incredibly awesome students come and help us out, get to know the kids and the community. We can’t wait to meet who comes this year! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 94 individual members for this year so far, a total of $9328, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6700 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $15000 mark so far this year! § ILI In the Media: Joyce Laabs from the Lakeland Times was at our Community Meeting last night so look for an article in next weeks paper. Bob was interviewed today on local public radio out of Rhinelander WXPR. Nice to create a “buzz” about something so positive! § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: § Monday March 12: LdF/MHLT 4th grade session #3. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. § Tuesday March 13: LdF/AVW 4th grade session #3. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. § Wednesday March 14: LUHS ILI junior/senior Activity Period. Weekly Update Friday March 2, 2007 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week! § We facilitated LUHS ILI sessions on Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School Drama rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday. § We would like to invite all of you to the next Community Wide Meeting to be held on March 8 at Norwood Pines restaurant in Minocqua! The meeting will start at 5:30pm and we will provide hors d’ouevres. The purpose of these meetings is to encourage the community-at-large to come together to discuss a wide range of ideas, strategies, pprotocols and “best practices” that we would like our schools and communities to employ in the effort to keep our children healthy and vibrant. We are working towards developing a “Community Wide Prevention Plan” from these meetings that we will present to parents, school administrators, community and tribal leaders, counselors, social workers, law enforcement and others who play important roles in the development of our youth. § We met on Tuesday with John Lund and Christine Caz from the Howard Young Foundation for a photo-op for the donation their foundation gave to us this year. We also were given a number of Howard Young Foundation 2006 Annual reports that has a highlighted story of ILI in there! It is a beautiful publication and was mailed out to thousands of people so its great publicity for ILI. Christine is writing a letter of support for us for the Ministry Health Grant we are hoping we get asked to make a full application for. Our Letter of Intent was completed this week. Thanks HYF for all your great support!! § We have a number of ILI students (8th grade and high school age) participating in the March 3-4 ILI Service Learning/Overnight Retreat Experience. ILI was nominated as a
“Service To Science” program through the Central Center For the
Advancement of Prevention Technology, a nomination solicited by the
State of Wisconsin. We were
informed this week that we came in 2nd! Lou Oppor from Madison told us
he asked the folks at CAPT to consider two
programs from Wisconsin
so we should find out sometime soon if we qualify. This is a program to
honor
programs that are working towards becoming science-based and would be a
nice
honor to receive.
