Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § We hosted the final 4th grade sessions for this year completing our tenth year of programming for elementary students! We had a bit of a mix-up this week with three instead of two schools showing up for our Tuesday session, but with the wonderful cooperation of AVW and LdF schools and teachers we were able to make it work out-thanks everybody! The LUHS ILI After School Leadership group is continuing to work on the May 2 Middle School Fundraising Dance that will be held at LUHS and will be meeting more often after school to make sure they cover their planning needs. They are hoping to raise enough funds to cover a trip to Minneapolis after school is over in June. § Don’t forget the April 29th ILI Fundraiser at the local Dairy Queen in Minocqua. They will be donating a portion of their sales to ILI as a fundraiser for our project which includes: o ILI will get 10% of all sales between 5 and 8pm on that evening, which includes: any cake orders paid for in full-get a Mothers Day Cake!! o orders of buster or dilly bars paid for in full (they will have an extra stock on hand so people can order boxes of them) o all sales, dine in, take out, cake sales or drive up orders o Bring the family and enjoy eating good treats and helping ILI at the same time! § The next Lakeland Area Community Meeting will be held on Wednesday May 7 at the LdF Wellness Center from 5:30pm-8:00pm. We’ll get an agenda out next week-lots to be working on right now! § ILI staff is continuing to work on some new ideas and structural changes for next year. We had a great meeting this week with LUHS teacher Mike Mestelle where we brainstormed ideas for enhancing and supporting his curriculum with ILI-based activities. Our purpose is to provide teachers with support and enhancement in any way that they see fit. We discussed looking at his World Culture curriculum and how we could “value-add” ILI into the key concepts he has designated for each section. Pretty cool-we’ll be working more on this to develop a pilot. LUHS is taking some really exciting steps towards redesigning 9th grade so Mr. Mestelle felt that this was a good time for us to collaborate. Very exciting! § Ernie has been working on a very unique new proposal for bringing ILI to all of the Tribes in Wisconsin. The approach is to offer monthly “ILI Sessions” with staff going on-site. After 10 years of developing our staff, ideas and curriculum we’re ready to share our expertise and collaborate in other Tribal communities where the issues of are all the same as they are here. We’re going to put all this together in a nice package and send our proposals out to each Tribe within the next few weeks. § Our proposal to UW-La Crosse for the 3rd annual ILI/UW LaCrosse Summer Camp has been accepted-so we’re set for that the end of July. This is a great group-they came down here today with some of their college students who will be staff this summer to meet with us and get a mini-orientation. § We are working on the First Nations Development Institute Native Youth and Culture Fund that is due Monday. We submitted the Ministry Health Care Foundation Grant application today. We’re preparing a concept paper to submit next week to the Office of Juvenile Assistance. If accepted, we’ll be asked to submit a full proposal for funding that would begin in January 2009. § The Lyme Disease Awareness Network is hosting a free concert starring Brett and Frisk at the Ascension Lutheran Church hwy 51 south in Minocqua at 7:30 p.m. on May 3, 2008. Donations to support the Lyme Network and Jennifer Kane (of Arbor Vitae) who is struggling with chronic Lyme disease will be greatly appreciated. Have some fun and help out a great cause and a friend of ILI! § We received $500 this week from American Express Gift matching program-set up by one of our ILI volunteers and a great friend to ILI. Thank you!! § ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday April 30: LUHS ILI Activity period. Junior/Senior. LUHS Multi-purpose room. 9:45am-10:15am. o Friday May 2: ILI Benefit Dance for all area 6th-8th grade students. 6pm-9pm. § ILI Volunteers: Elementary Sessions are over!! THANK YOU to all volunteers for their help and commitment to helping make ILI such a success for all students! We will be contacting you soon to help with putting together the packets for the year-end ILI Surveys. We’ll be also getting in touch for our year-end volunteer get-together later this spring to celebrate another great year in ILI! § ILI Annual Fundraising: Our restructured two year budget is now $406720. Thanks to your support we have currently raised $395517 of our two year $406720 budget. $11,203 away from our goal but getting closer!! § FOR MORE INFORMATION and the latest session calendar please check the ILI website at www.ilileadership.org. Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2007-2008 Weekly Update Friday April 18, 2008 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § We hosted the final 6th grade session for this year and are all ready for next weeks final sessions of the year with 4th graders! § ILI staff is continuing to work on some new ideas and structural changes for next year. We are specifically developing strategies that would mean less “pull-outs” during the day from schools and more value-added integration of ILI into the curriculum. This will mean working more closely with teachers to understand their curricular needs. Schools are becoming less willing to have students out of their buildings during the school day so we have to adapt. It will provide some new directions and opportunities-another big and exciting challenge for ILI! § ILI is part of a pilot project along with Vilas County Teen Court called Vilas Youth Voice, sponsored by Wisconsin Youth Voice. Each program will be receiving $3000 to pilot strategies to more successfully include youth voices in the decision-making process throughout our area. We will be working with teachers to pilot development of integrated curriculum in civics or leadership classes that will allow students, as part of their in school curriculum, to be out in the community participating in civic affairs and meetings. Pretty exciting! Thanks to Nancy Livingston and the Vilas County Youth Coalition for helping make this a reality! § We have been asked to help provide activities at the annual Lakes Festival in LdF this summer. We’re working on this possibility. § We have submitted a proposal for the 3rd annual ILI/UW LaCrosse Summer Camp to the folks down in LaCrosse. We hope to be hearing back from them soon. § We are working on the First Nations Development Institute Native Youth and Culture Fund and Ministry Health Care Foundation Grant applications. Both are due at the end of next week. § Attached is a summer literacy training brochure for persons interested in tutoring persons of low literacy. This might be of interest to some of our volunteers who work in school settings and other folks who are interested in volunteering their time and expertise to help others. § Don’t forget the April 29th ILI Fundraiser at the local Dairy Queen in Minocqua. They will be donating a portion of their sales to ILI as a fundraiser for our project which includes: o ILI will get 10% of all sales between 5 and 8pm on that evening, which includes: any cake orders paid for in full-get a Mothers Day Cake!! o orders of buster or dilly bars paid for in full (they will have an extra stock on hand so people can order boxes of them) o all sales, dine in, take out, cake sales or drive up orders § The Lyme Disease Awareness Network is hosting a free concert starring Brett and Frisk at the Ascension Lutheran Church hwy 51 south in Minocqua at 7:30 p.m. on May 3, 2008. Donations to support the Lyme Network and Jennifer Kane (of Arbor Vitae) who is struggling with chronic Lyme disease will be greatly appreciated. Have some fun and help out a great cause and a friend of ILI! § ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Monday April 21: LdF/MHLT 4th Grade ILI. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. o Tuesday April 22: LdF/AVW 4th Grade ILI. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. o Wednesday April 23: LUHS ILI Activity period. Freshman/Sophomore. LUHS Multi-purpose room. 9:45am-10:15am. o Thursday April 24: LdF/NLES 4th Grade ILI. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. § ILI Volunteers: We’re winding down-just a one more week of sessions. Thanks to your support we have currently raised $395017 of our two year $406720 budget. $11,703 away from our goal but getting closer!! § FOR MORE INFORMATION and the latest session calendar please check the ILI website at www.ilileadership.org. Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § We hosted the final 5th grade sessions for this year-two really nice days! The LUHS ILI After School Leadership session was cancelled this week due to a death in the community. The group is continuing to work on the May 2 ILI Fundraising Dance that will be held at LUHS and will be meeting more often after school to make sure they cover their planning needs. The 6th grade session cancelled due to the snowstorm last week has been rescheduled and will take place on Monday at Camp Jorn. By them maybe winter will look a bit more like spring! § ILI staff is working on some new ideas and structural changes for next year. We are working with the schools to make sure we accommodate their needs and schedules. We’ll keep you updated as this develops. § We have just updated the numbers of students who have attended the LUHS/ILI After School Learning Center, an after school tutoring program offered three days a week. So far this year, 247 LUHS students have participated at least one day this school year. Many of these students have attended more than one time, for a total of 494 student/days. § We completed our application this week to the Pioneer Institute Better Government Competition. We will be contacted after the judges make their decisions. They will award one winner and four runners-up chosen by their judges, and four special recognition awardees chosen by Pioneer Institute staff members. § We are still in the running for the Harvard University “Honoring Our Nations” award that we were nominated for by the LdF Tribe-we should hear this summer. § We have been active on LUHS’s Citizenship Committee this school year during which time we had some excellent dialogue on bringing more restorative practices into the school. Here’s a link that highlights the positive impact of increasing restorative practices in one school in Wisconsin: http://dpi.wi.gov/seachange/sea0713_3.html § We received notice this week that after reviewing 150 Letters Of Intent for the First Nations Development Institute Native Youth and Culture Fund, ILI was one of 63 finalists invited to submit a full proposal. They will be able to fund 20-25 programs so its quite competitive but we’ll do our best! This is due April 28. § We’re working on the Ministry Health Care grant-that is due April 25. § Don’t forget the April 29th ILI Fundraiser at the local Dairy Queen in Minocqua. They will be donating a portion of their sales to ILI as a fundraiser for our project which includes: o ILI will get 10% of all sales between 5 and 8pm on that evening, which includes: any cake orders paid for in full-get a Mothers Day Cake!! o orders of buster or dilly bars paid for in full (they will have an extra stock on hand so people can order boxes of them) o all sales, dine in, take out, cake sales or drive up orders § Remember the referendum coming up the end of April for AVW School. We urge you to vote and support these referendums in our schools. While they might not be the best answers to the school fiscal crisis in Wisconsin, until our legislators and state leadership take some real action to resolve the crisis there seem to be few choices. Our most precious resource is our children and we must do everything in our power to make sure they are not the ones who lose the most. § ILI In the Media: There was another nice article in the latest LUHS T-Bird News updating the efforts of ILI students. Thanks LUHS! § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Monday April 14: LdF/MHLT/AVW 6th Grade ILI. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. o Wednesday April 16: LUHS ILI Activity period. Junior/Senior. LUHS Multi-purpose room. 9:45am-10:15am. § ILI Volunteers: We’re winding down-just a few more weeks of sessions. Leadership Initiative 2007-2008 Weekly Update Friday April 4, 2008 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § We worked this week preparing for our 5th grade sessions at Camp Jorn next week. We had to cancel the 6th grade session due to the snowstorm earlier this week but are working to reschedule. § We are working on media for the April 29th ILI Fundraiser at the local Dairy Queen in Minocqua. They will be donating a portion of their sales to ILI as a fundraiser for our project which includes: o ILI will get 10% of all sales between 5 and 8pm on that evening, which includes: any cake orders paid for in full-get a Mothers Day Cake!! o orders of buster or dilly bars paid for in full (they will have an extra stock on hand so people can order boxes of them) o all sales, dine in, take out, cake sales or drive up orders Satisfying your hunger that evening will help us out greatly! § We received $25 this week from the Friends of ILI Campaign-thank you!! § Transition Committee: The committee met on Tuesday afternoon at LUHS. At the meeting we were told that they did not need ILI students or staff to help at Transition Day. We’re glad to have started Transition day and pleased that the schools will continue to carry out this great event for all area 8th graders-that was what we hoped would happen! § We were disappointed to find out that the Mentoring Grant application we were partners in with AVW School was denied. § Speaking of AVW-they have a referendum coming up the end of April-we urge you to go out and support these referendums in our schools. The small tax increases are hard to swallow for sure for all of us, but these children are our future and we should support and nurture them at all costs. Just our opinion, but its why we do what we do-because we support healthy, well-rounded children. If the referendum does not pass, many good programs will be cut at AVW, including ILI. § ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Monday April 7: LdF/MHLT/AVW 5th Grade ILI. Camp Jorn 9am-2pm. o Tuesday April 8: LdF/NLES 6th Grade ILI. Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. o Wednesday April 9: LUHS ILI Activity period. Freshman/Sophomore. The students did an outstanding job of presenting their reason for the dance (a benefit for ILI LUHS student trip). The students also did an excellent job of answering the questions Mr. Kleinhans had for them. We were very proud of our up and coming leaders, they did a fantastic job. The idea was approved pending space availability-we’ll keep you posted. § We were invited to fill out a full application by the Ministry Health Care Foundation! This will be the last update for
two weeks due to Spring
Break! Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-
§ We had a great week of 7th grade sessions-we’ve sent you email summaries of each. § We also had an excellent after school session on Wednesday that we reported to you. Here is an excerpt from an email we received from a parent about her student who was in ILI on Wednesday “Well, (my student) came home stating she is an official "ILI Leader". She shared the idea on a fundraiser to get to the Twin Cities. As she was telling me the rest of the plans that should go into this event I suggested she start putting it on paper before she forgets. We had a great time relating our similar personality that we are the motivators and energetic starters but have to struggle to see a project through to completion. Since she knew what I was talking about she agreed to get on the computer and spent a good amount of time planning the items they would need and the amount of people for each area and their volunteer 'job' description. She mentioned that someone said they "were very proud of her" at ILI last night. Those words went deep into her heart there is no doubt and I was able to confirm that her efforts are very worthy of pride and that I too am proud of her! (My student) is a leader in the making for sure! Thank you to the ILI team!!” We wanted to share this with you as an example of what happens in ILI, even (especially?) when we just work with small groups of students. There is a powerful effect and it works on many levels. We are very proud of all of our students and the parents and other adults in their lives who work so hard to make their lives successful and healthy. ILI and parents are a great partnership-there’s so many opportunities for us if we are willing to explore them! § We hosted the 13th Lakeland Area Community Meeting at the LdF Wellness Center on Tuesday. LUHS new superintendent Todd Kleinhans was in attendance and it really was a great meeting (see notes)! The next meeting will be held in conjunction with the Townhall Supper on April 1. THANK YOU Todd for attending-it really meant a lot! § Matt and Alice leave with four LUHS ILI students from LdF on Saturday for Mississippi. They will be attending a weeklong leadership camp for American Indian students in the New Orleans area-pretty cool! We’ll have them give us a summary of what happened down there when they return. § We have completed the second phase of the Harvard Award-special thanks to LdF Tribal President Victoria Doud for sending along a really nice letter of support! § We completed the Ministry Health Care Letter of Intent and sent that in. Thank you to John Lund from the Howard Young Health Care Foundation for sending is a Letter of Support along with our Letter of Intent! We received this grant this past year and are hoping to continue this great partnership! § We have started work on another grant: the Pioneer Institute’s Better Government Competition. This is due April 8. § ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Next week is SPRING BREAK! Have fun everybody! § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting scheduled for March 26, 2007 at 4:00pm.
