ILI/LUHS Transition Program

This is the third year of our Transition Program for all area 8th grade students. ILI was instrumental in reviving the Lakeland Area Transition Committee, with representation from all the feeder schools and the high school. The past two years, grants received through ILI provided the funding for the 2 main activity days that occur each year: one in May and the second on the first day of school at LUHS in September. This year, LUHS and ILI are sharing in the costs for these days. The Transition Committee has also been a place where all of the schools can discuss other transition-related issues and recent discussion regarding developing common disciplinary expectations and sequential prevention programming has been very productive. This committee meets monthly.

TOTAL Session Days: 2

Other ILI Involvement in the Community:

ILI staff has long believed that a variety of strategies need to be simultaneously occurring in order address the range of unhealthy symptoms we experience in the community, and to improve the opportunities for American Indian children and their families. To this end, we are constantly working to expand our areas of leadership, advocacy and influence.

Positive Alternatives Coalition (PAC)

§ PAC is a local AODA Prevention Coalition supported by the Drug Free Community Grant and run by ILI staff. PAC is most currently working on developing a Community-Wide Prevention Plan. PAC is responsible for bringing the Model Program “Positive Action” into all of the schools in Vilas County (including LdF) as well as supporting a number of “Emerging Programs” that serve LdF children and families in.cluding: ILI;

§ We learned this week that MHLT principal Peg Wolff is leaving the area to take a new job in the Marshfield school district. Peg has been involved with ILI since our early days and was always a great advocate for our program as well as an excellent mentor as we were learning how to bring our program into area schools. Her husband Dave attended many ILI session with MHLT students and was always an excellent leader. We’ll miss them and their kids (who were also in ILI) and we wish them all good luck in their new surroundings. Thanks Peg for all you have done for our community!

§ On Tuesday evening, Bob gave a presentation on ILI to the AVW school board at their regular meeting. It was well received and we had some good discussion. AVW has been a great supporter of ILI and their innovative approach to education with expeditionary learning fits well with our approach. After the meeting, we talked for a bit with their art teacher about ways to bring art into our efforts-always something new to consider and try!

§ We are working on a grant application to the Association of American Indian Affairs for support of our upcoming UW-La Crosse camp.

§ We continue to plan for the UW-La Crosse camp-Ernie is putting the finishing touches on an excellent curriculum and we are going over all of the details and logistics-lots going on!

§ On thursday, ILI staff met to start working on a 36-week curriculum proposal for our after school ILI Wednesday program. We are hoping that the school would approve our program for credit for students that participate. This is a pretty big undertaking, we need to have this for the LUHS school board meeting at the end of July. We will continue to work on this today.

§ We received $175 this week from Friends of ILI-thanks so much!

§ ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week.

§ Upcoming ILI sessions and events:

§ Monday July 24-Thursday July 27: UW-LaCrosse ILI Camp

§ ILI/LUHS Transition:

§ Next Transition Day is the first day of school for LUHS freshman.

§ ILI Volunteers:

§ Thanks everyone for helping out!

§ The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: If any of you would like to join “Friends of ILI” just let us know and we’ll send you the materials!

§ ILI Annual Fundraising: We have raised $361,376 of the $392,136 budget for the 2004-06 budget.

Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI-

§ ILI staff continued to work on the plans for the UW-LaCrosse camp in July. Ernie is putting the final touches on the curricular program. We all met Monday morning to discuss details and logistics. Lori and Stef St. Germaine will be helping us so it really should be a dynamite week.

§ We worked on a couple of presentations and funding requests this week-Bob was in Keshena on the Menominee reservation today to present an ILI update to the Wisconsin Indian Education Association board of directors. The meeting went really well and the board will consider our request for continued support at their July meeting. WIEA has long been a strong supporter of ILI and we had a great discussion today regarding ways to bring sustainability and continued growth to programs that work for all students. We made a new contact today with the WIEA representative from Ho-Chunk who is also very interested in partnering with ILI staff to bring some new opportunities to their tribe.

§ On Wednesday, Bob met at length with LUHS assistant principal Jon Lucivansky to discuss a number of opportunities for ILI. First, ILI will be leading Transition activities again this year during part of the first day of school for freshman on September 1. We also discussed putting aside about 45 minutes or so on that morning for freshman to sign up for the various clubs and activities. We then discussed at length some possibilities for ILI to help with the alternative ed programming this next year. We are proposing to pilot a small program that will be tailored to individual students and will include various tribal curricular tracks, internship possibilities, mentoring and facilitation opportunities. We’ll be working on a 36-week scope and sequence over the next few weeks to give to LUHS as a proposal. Our working relationship with LUHS continues to deepen and we’re always excited to explore new opportunities!

§ Our fiscal year-end is quickly approaching so we are working on our next two-year budget. We have fallen somewhat short of our two-year goal but not by too much thanks to all of your support! We received $15 this week from Friends of ILI-thanks so much!

§ ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week.

§ Upcoming ILI sessions and events:

§ Monday July 24-Thursday July 27: UW-LaCrosse ILI Camp

Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI-

§ On Tuesday Bob and Ernie went to Mole Lake and met with members of the Sakaogon Education Committee as well as their grant writer to talk about strategies for getting them more involved with ILI so they can consider developing their own community program. It was an excellent meeting and we all left feeling really excited about the possibilities. We talked about some specific program ideas as well as strategies for training facilitators, consulting for grassroots organizing and curriculum development. They are very interested in working with us and we are currently trying to work a way for them to participate in the UW-LaCRosse ILI camp next month-lots going on!

§ We received an email this week from Patty Loew, author, UW professor, producer of Wisconsin Public TV and host of the show “In Wisconsin” and a good Friend of ILI asking us to collaborate with her and her staff on putting together a “One Sky, Two Views” conference next school year here in our area. Patty received a grant to teach middle school students about the sky from the different perspectives of western science and traditional American Indian culture. This conference will be for 6-8th grade students and we will invite all of our students as well as students from other nearby reservations (Forest County and Mole Lake Sakaogon) to experience this unique presentation of understanding the sky. Patty is collaborating on this effort with colleagues from the UW Madison Space Science and Engineering Outreach so this should be an outstanding event. We’ll keep you posted as this new opportunity develops!

§ Our progress on the UW-LaCrosse camp continues really well-ILI staff will be going down to LaCrosse the week before the camp to meet with the LaCrosse staff for some pre-planning and meeting so we can really have an excellent program for the students the following week. This is really turning out to be a great collaboration-the folks down there are great to work with and are very excited about coming up here. Please remind Alice whenever you see her to start planning for good weather now-its never too early J

§ On Wednesday, ILI staff went out for lunch to say goodbye for the summer to Matt White-one of our facilitators. Matt has spent part of the last 2 summers running a camp in lower Michigan for the month of July. He’ll be back in August, but we needed to say goodbye and make sure he left with a very full stomach-it’s a long drive to Michigan and he’s still a growing boyJ Summer is typically a time for ILI staff to take a deep breath, relax, get away and recharge our batteries-some of us recharge differently than others. Matt will be very busy running the camp, but he sure is getting a lot of great experience! See you in August Matt!

§ Bob met today with Mike Dailey at LUHS to discuss ILI next year. We had a great meeting talking about a really widening range of opportunities for ILI as well as support for next year. We went over all of our year-end numbers of students served, surveys, etc-and discussed some action steps we need to take for our hope of having ILI students receive credit for their work in ILI. Lots happening here too-we’ll keep you posted, but some exciting opportunities to take ILI to some new levels next year!

Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI-

§ On Sunday evening and Monday we were part of the annual Lake of the Torches Charity Golf Classic hosted by the Lake of the Torches Resort and Casino-what a great event! Sunday evening there was a reception dinner at the convention center where all of the golfers, the four charities (ILI, Lakeland Sharing Foundation, Special Olympics and the LdF Abinoojiyag Center) and the celebrity pro football players came together. Each charity had a few minutes to address the crowd and we were so incredibly proud of LUHS ILI students Jazmyn Deragon and Tiffany Willey who spoke eloquently on behalf of ILI. They both did a great job-it was not easy as they had to be up on stage at the podium-but they were terrific! They each spoke for a few minutes about what ILI meant to them and to the schools in the area. Then they stayed up on stage as the football players were introduced. Finally, they were together in a large group photo-famous! The next day we were at Timber Ridge Golf course at 6am for a full day of helping at the tournament. We sold raffle tickets during the day-more than $1000 worth!-and had a great time hanging out with some of the football players and community folks who supported the effort. At the end of the day, they drew the big raffle that each charity sold tickets for and ILI volunteers John and Gretchen Spickerman won 1st place! 3rd place went to ILI facilitator Breia Pfaller’s mom-so we were really happy! Thanks to ILI staff and volunteers Dick and Joanie Fahning and Joe and Bev Strauss for being there to help-it was a great day! Our unending thanks go out to all the folks at Lake of the Torches, especially Randy Soulier and Laura Stoffel for all that they do, not only for ILI, but for our community-they are incredibly giving-thanks, we couldn’t do this without your support!

§ On Tuesday Megan and Anne (UW-interns) continued their work on all surveys and evaluations from this past year-and they got all of them completed. We will have the 2005-06 Annual ILI Evaluation Report out soon thanks to their great efforts. Anne and Megan did an excellent job as interns and instantly became part of our ILI family when they arrived here three weeks ago. They experienced ILI from the inside out, from early morning to late night and even overnight! We’re really going to miss you Megan and Anne-thanks from all of us J

§ On Wednesday, ILI staff had a breakfast meeting to thank the interns and then we went up to the Porkies for the day to scout out where we will be taking the UW-LaCrosse folks in July. It was a beautiful day and we laid the groundwork for what we will be doing there when we have 60 people with us next month. Yikes!

§ We received good news this week that one of the programs here at GLITC that has helped to support a portion of Craig’s position will be able to continue that into next year-we’re very excited about this-all thanks to Jeff Muse who is our boss here at GLITC. As many of you know-Craig is just a gifted individual in his abilities in working with youth, we’re so lucky to have him with us. Thanks Jeff J

§ We received $5000 this week LUHS as the final payment of our agreement for the 2005-06 school year. LUHS really has been a great supporter of ILI-not only through financial support but also providing ILI office space inside the high school which enable Craig and Ernie to connect with students and staff on so many levels. Our working relationship/partnership here is a critical piece in the ILI puzzle. Thanks LUHS for your continued support!

June 2, 2006

Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI:

  • We continue to work on our plans for the UW-LaCrosse camp in July. Ernie has been writing the curriculum and we have been trying to work on some of the logistics and details. It's going to be a great new direction for ILI!

  • We were contacted this week by the folks from Mole Lake who are very interested in finding a way to make ILI work for them there. They invited us to attend some meetings in June. The Sakaogon Chippewa paid their remaining debt off this week to the mining company for land that was to be mined (a controversy that lasted 30 years), which in turn the mining company gave back to the tribe in the form of an endowment. The money is to be mainly used for education and health issues. We’re excited to see what the possibilities are-we’ll keep you posted.

  • Alice, volunteer Joan Fahning, Breia, and Megan and Anne (UW-interns) worked hard this week on tallying up all of our evaluations and year-end surveys for the whole year! This is a huge job-lots of counting-but now we should be able to put our annual evaluation report together and have it ready for anyone to see within the next few weeks. As in the past-the numbers reflect a strong support from parents, teachers and students for ILI.

  • We’ve been invited to present ILI at the Wisconsin Indian Education Association board meeting in Keshena later this month. WIEA has been a very strong supporter of ILI and we’re looking forward to meeting with them to share what we did over this past year.

  • We found out this week that the Wisconsin Youth Conference we were going to be helping facilitate some activities for on June 14 has been cancelled-we’re disappointed but will continue to work with them (NARCH program at GLITC and UW-Stevens Point) for next year.

  • Yesterday and today we helped facilitate an overnight for the LdF/AVW 4th grade classes of Nancy Saykally and Lori Berryman. These two teachers took it upon themselves to organize this experience as an extension of their ILI experience during the school year. Trig’s donated food for dinner last night and the teachers arranged for other food. Craig, Matt, Alice, Anne and Megan did most of the facilitating. The overnight was held at no cost to us at Camp Nawakwa in Lac du Flambeau on Big Crooked Lake. This is really a beautiful setting and many thanks go out to their staff and especially Kirby Peterson their director, for his sincere outreach to the community. We’ll be sending you a write-up of what happened-but thanks Nancy and Lori for making this happen for your kids-they all sure looked happy in the lake together despite the water snake!

  • We received $1000 this week from the American Express Gift matching program through their foundation. We have a wonderful “Friend of ILI” who wishes to remain anonymous who helps make this happen-Thank you so much!

  • We received $380 this week from UW-EauClaire for our presentation at the annual Adolescents and Families Conference this past April in Cable, WI. Thanks to them for their continued support of ILI and helping us reach out to folks across the state.

  • ILI In the Media: There’s a nice article in todays Lakeland Times on last week’s Transition Day. Thanks again to Wisconsin Public Service for helping to make this possible!

  • Carry The Torch Golf Classic: You are invited to come join us Sunday evening from 6:30-8:30 at the Lake of the Torches Resort and Casino where there will be a reception for all of the former pro football players and golfers who will be participating in Mondays Carry the Torch Golf Classic. We will have ILI students giving a short presentation on ILI and thanking everyone for helping ILI out through this great event-they will speak shortly after 7pm. On Monday we’ll be at Timber Ridge all day for the event-should be a great day! We’ve sold almost every last ticket of ours-so if you bought a raffle ticket- thank you and good luck we hope you win!!

  • Upcoming ILI sessions and events:

    • Sunday June 4: 6:30pm-8:30pm: Lake of the Torches Golf Classic Reception and Dinner. Convention Center.

    • Monday June 5: 6:30am-4:00pm: Lake of the Torches Golf Classic. Timber Ridge Country Club.

    • Thursday June 8: UW-Interns leave.
  • ILI/LUHS Transition: Next Transition Day is the first day of school for LUHS freshman.

  • ILI Volunteers: Thanks everyone for helping out!

  • The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: If any of you would like to join “Friends of ILI” just let us know and we’ll send you the materials!

  • ILI Annual Fundraising: We have raised $356,361 of the $392,136 budget for the 2004-06 budget.

We’re working on a syllabus to submit. We’ll keep ypou posted!

  • ILI staff met most of the day on Monday to discuss our proposed plan for the UW-LaCrosse summer camp. Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI

  • On Monday Bob was in Red Cliff meeting on the Disproportionality Task Force. This group is looking at reasons why American Indian students with disabilities are labeled so disproportionally compared to their school population size. This small grant is helping Ashland, batfield and Hayward schools look at some solutions. 24 more schools across the state were notified by DPI last week that they were disproportionate and need to take action. This group will continue to meet to try and brainstorm solutions to this issue. In Red Cliff, the main thrust of the conversation gad to do with improving tribal/school relationships and building trust in the community.

  • Also on Monday, Ernie and Craig attended a local meeting on truancy. This was an initial meeting to discuss truancy issues and to start to talk about some solution oriented strategies. ILI is attending these meetings to see what we can do to help this situation. More meetings to follow.

  • On Tuesday we talked further with UW-LaCrosse about facilitating a 3-day/2-nite camp up here for 38 high school students that are in one of their summer camps. We’re trying to work out the details and by next week we will have a proposal to them. This is an exciting new opportunity for us!

  • On Wednesday ILI staff met in the morning to discuss our presentation plan and curriculum. We will be presenting ILI to a number of communities in the near future and we have been discussing our strategies to do this.

  • On Wednesday we had our end of the year lunch for all LUHS ILI students. We had a lot of fun-25 pizzas from Pizza Hut went pretty fast considering there was only one contest! At the end of each year we throw this “party” for our LUHS students to thank them for being a part of ILI and to say goodbye to our graduating seniors.

  • Ernie gave a talk at AVW to their 7th grade on court systems-but he gave it in a way that allowed students to learn by participation. The activities were fun and it really caught their interest! Lots of great messages in here for students and everyone seemed to really enjoy it.

  • Also on Wednesday, our two UW-Madison interns, Megan and Anne arrived for their three week immersion. We are very grateful to have them here-this is the third set of interns from Madison for us and we always enjoy having them become a part of our ILI family. They will be helping us with a lot of things over the next few weeks-many of you will get a chance to meet them!

  • Also on Wednesday (a long day!!) we met with lake of the Torches casino staff regarding the upcoming golf tournament to iron out final details. There’s a great list of former NFL players that you can meet at the Casino on Sunday evening, June 4, from 6:30-8:30 or play golf with on June 5 at Timber Ridge CC: Jim Bakken, Bobby Bell, Ted Brown, Carter Campbell, Ron Carlson, Marv Fleming, Noel Janke, Ray Jarvis, Bob Jeter, Gary Knafelc, Larry Krause, Dale Livingston, Bob Long, John Martinkovic, Lee Nystrom, Chris Osswald, Oscar Reed, Dave Robinson, Bill Schroeder, Jerry Stalcup, Deral Teteak and Stu Voigt. Come by and either play or meet the players-its going to be a lot of fun!!

  • Thursday we finished our school funding requests for 2006-07. We meet with our school partners next week.

  • Thursday morning we oriented our interns to the LUHS ILI office and school forest where Transition day activities will take place next Wednesday. We will be busy preparing for that in the next few days.

  • The year-end surveys continue to pour in-so far we have 428 back here waiting to be tabulated! Let us know when your school has them completed and we will be coming by to get them.

  • We received $2175 this week from Friends of ILI –we are now well over our goal for this campaign closing in on $15000! Thanks everybody-this is really wonderful.

  • We received $300 this week from Pukall Lumber Foundation-they have been an ILI supporter for some years now and we greatly appreciate their continued support!

Here's what's been going on this week in ILI

  • The LdF/AVW 4th grade overnight has been rescheduled to June 1-2
at Camp Nawakwa due to the snowstorm-beautiful spring weather eh?

  • Last night ILI and YELP hosted the 6th Annual Cultural Fair at the
LdF Convention Center-more than 150 people were there for some great food,
veterans flag ceremony, drum and demonstration powwow and our guest speaker,
DJ Eagle Bear Vanas who gave a very inspirational talk to all in attendance.
Earlier in the day, he gave another talk to LdF school 6th-8th graders that
went really well. He is a really wonderful speaker and his words definitely
got a lot of wheels turning! Thanks to Azael Meza (YELP), Laura Stoffel (LdF
Casino) and the LdF Tribe for their support in making this day a great
    success!

  • On Monday and Tuesday Bob traveled to Madison for a State AODA
Council meeting and to read AODA Program grant applications written by
schools from across Wisconsin. It was interesting to see that the large
majority of the applications were requesting funds to support
social/emotional activities as a strategy to have an impact on AODA issues.
Most applications cited the importance of leadership training, mentoring,
character building, adult role models etc-many of the components of ILI. At
the very least, affirming that our philosophy and position over the past 8
years plays a valid and important role.

  • ILI staff is working on reformatting how we present ILI to other
communities-an important project as in the next few weeks we will be meeting
with folks in Lac Courte Oreilles and Hayward.

  • We talked with UW-LaCrosse folks this week about facilitating some
days up here in July for their youth summer camps. We're still trying to
figure out the logistics and if we can make this work. Eventually, we would
like to see if we can hook some of our ILI students for this experience as
it could be another opportunity to expose them to college students and the
importance of education in their lives.

  • On Wednesday we met with LUHS ILI freshman/sophomore group and
then again after school with a group for two hours. We continue to train
these students to help co-facilitate during Transition Day on May 24. The
    students are very excited!

  • The year-end surveys are pouring in! Just in time, next week we
get two UW-Madison interns for 3 weeks and one of their tasks will be to
help compile all of this data. We're hoping with all this great help to get
our 2005-06 Annual Evaluation Report done before school starts in September.

  • We met early this morning at LUHS with all of the Transition staff
(teachers and guidance) to discuss May 24 Transition Day. ILI staff,
students and volunteers will be there to help with activities and to help
serve food. Its going to be a great day!

  • ILI staff did with the LdF 5th grade this morning.

  • We will not be able to write the Indian Health Service Grant we
were interested in. GLITC has a policy that if other tribes are applying for
a grant, we will not compete. We polled the tribes and several are writing
this grant. There are a number of grants out there that ILI is really ripe
to apply for but we have been unable to because of this policy, which we
understand and support. So our strategy needs to evolve. We will be actively
seeking partnerships with Tribes on specific grants over the next year as
well as working to bring together Tribal Ed Directors so we can explain what
we have to offer with ILI. A consortium grant (Indian Demonstration Grant
for example) would benefit all tribes.

  • We received $25 this week from Friends of ILI and had a wonderful
meeting with a new "Friend" who wishes to remain anonymous-but is very
interested in our project and may be helping us substantially over the next
    few years.

  • ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week.

  • Carry The Torch Golf Classic: We still have a few raffle tickets
for this great event that will be held on June 5. There will only be 2000
tickets sold and 1st place will win $500, 2nd place $300 and 3rd place $200!
So you have a great opportunity to support ILI and possibly win some big
cash at the same time! Let us know if you want to buy some tickets-they are
    $1 apiece.

  • Upcoming ILI sessions and events:

    • Wednesday May 17: LUHS 5a-5b lunch period: end of year lunch for
LUHS ILI students. Lotsa pizza! All ILI volunteers and LUHS administration
are invited to attend! UW-Madison interns arrive!

    • Friday May 19: 9am-11am: LdF 5th Grade guidance activities

    • Wednesday May 24: LUHS all area 8th grade Transition Day. All day
      LUHS school forest.

    • Thursday/Friday June 1-2: LdF/AVW 4th Grade ILI Overnight.

    • Sunday June 4: 6:30pm-8:30pm: Lake of the Torches Golf Classic
      Reception and Dinner. Convention Center.

    • Monday June 5: 6:30am-4:00pm: Lake of the Torches Golf Classic.
      Timber Ridge Country Club.

    • Thursday June 8: UW-Interns leave.

    • Wednesday June 14: 6:00pm-9:00pm: Wisconsin Youth Conference
activity session. ILI staff will lead activities for group of college-bound
      high school students.
  • ILI/LUHS Transition:

    • Transition Day is Wednesday, May 24, 2006.
  • ILI Volunteers: Thanks everyone for helping out!

  • The "Friends of ILI" membership drive: If any of you would like to
join "Friends of ILI" just let us know and we'll send you the materials!

  • ILI Annual Fundraising: We have raised $351,779 of the $392,136
    budget for the 2004-06 budget.

Friday May 5, 2006

Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI:

  • On Monday Bob traveled to Bayfield for the third meeting on disproportionality with regards to American Indian student academic and social achievement in Bayfield, Hayward and Ashland schools. These meetings supported by a small DPI grant. Hopefully, the recommendations that come out of these meetings will help schools decrease these gaps. Some great conversations and sharing at these meetings, and some sound ideas and suggestions.

  • On Monday and Tuesday we finished the first draft of our 2006-2007 ILI session calendar. We sent this out to our school partners for their approval and suggestions. If you haven’t already, please let us know if this calendar will work for your school next year-thanks!

  • On Wednesday we met with LUHS ILI freshman/sophomore group and then again after school with a group for two hours. We continue to train these students to help co-facilitate during Transition Day on May 24. The students are very excited

  • Ernie met this week with LUHS students attending the LUHS Extended Resources program in LdF. We are looking to find ways to work more often and effectively with these students. Lots of great opportunities!

  • We have completed assembling and delivering all of our year-end packets for all ILI students, teachers and parents and are already receiving survey responses back. We’re asking that all of these surveys be completed by May 9 if possible. Teachers, please help your students through their surveys-they are brief and should not take longer than 15 minutes. Let us know when you have them completed and we will come and get them. Thanks!

  • We have continued our discussions with the guidance people at Hayward High School and Lac Courts Oreilles. They are talking with each other and have asked us to come to LCO on May 25 for a meeting. They are assembling a small group of key stakeholders to attend. We are also talking with LCO about the possibility of partnering on a grant to help support this effort for next school year.

  • On Wednesday, we received a call from UW-LaCrosse staff who are interested in bringing a large group of students here for a 3-day camp with ILI staff at the end of July. We’ll be talking with them again next week to try and work out the details.

  • We met early Thursday morning at LUHS with all of the Transition staff (teachers and guidance) to discuss May 24 Transition Day. There is a great group of teachers involved at LUHS this year-they will be the incoming freshman’s homeroom teachers for the next 4 years. We discussed how the day will unfold and Kim Wasserburger requested a paragraph from each teacher in the next week or so explaining what they want to do on that day during the two 1 hour sessions they will have alone with their groups. Kim Olson is going to all of the grade schools and will be sharing with them what is expected of their 8th trade teachers that will be there with their students. ILI staff will be there to help with some activities and supervising students who will be helping. Its going to be a great day!

  • We met on Thursday with ILI volunteers to discuss our volunteer needs for Transition Day as well as the Golf Classic-it looks like we have it covered!

  • The 6th Annual ILI Culture Fair is next Thursday May 11 and we’d like to extend an invitation to you all to attend. It is free and will include food, Powwow and a talk by motivational speaker DJ Eagle Bear Vanas. We sent you a special email for this event earlier today

  • ILI staff once again helped with the LdF 5th grade this morning.

  • We’re getting active grant writing again: this week we did some tentative work on an Indian Health Service Grant, and sent our annual funding request for 2006-2007 to the LdF Tribal Council. We are contacting all of our school partners for meetings with them regarding next year as well. Finally, we spoke with the Forest County Potawatomi Community Foundation where we made an application last August and have been following up every few weeks. They have a new person there who has told us to re-submit for this year and that he would work with us for next year! So we’re excited about this possibility.

  • ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week.

  • Carry The Torch Golf Classic: We still have raffle tickets for this great event-but they are going fast!- that will be held on June 5. There will only be 2000 tickets sold and 1st place will win $500, 2nd place $300 and 3rd place $200! So you have a great opportunity to support ILI and possibly win some big cash at the same time! Let us know if you want to buy some tickets-they are $1 apiece.
