Weekly Update
Friday June 29, 2007

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-this will be the last update for two weeks-have a great 4th of July!!!
§         You are all invited to our next community meeting to be held at Lakeland Union High School on Tuesday July 10 at 5pm. Come ready to work-the identified four groups (Substance Abuse issues, Youth issues, Parenting Issues, and Racism) will be working developing individual action plans that we will use to develop a strategic plan, goals and objectives for a position paper to be presented in September to the public including key stakeholders in the community.
§         We’re gearing up for the 2nd annual ILI/UW LaCrosse Summer Camp the end of July. We will have about 65 people attending a five day session starting the evening of July 29. Participants will be in Lac du Flambeau for part of the time and up by Lake Superior for part of the time. There is a great diversity of student, American Indian, Hmong, African American and others-it was a blast last year! We’re really excited about it and Ernie has put together just an outstanding schedule for the week.
§         We continue to work this week on the Annual Evaluation Report that we hope to have done and printed within the next few weeks. This week we are going over the hundreds of drawings that students did as part of their session evals and trying to figure out a way to represent these in our report.
§         We continue to work on the DVD of the Transition Day in May. It is coming along slowly but surelyJ
§         We received $300 this week from The UW-Madison’s Waisman Center for the two wonderful interns that were here with us in May and June. Each year they send us an honorarium for working with their students. Their students are of such high quality we should be sending them the money! Thanks so much to the folks at Waisman for the partnership-its truly appreciated!
§         The ILI year end is coming up on June 30. July 1 is the beginning of the TENTH year for ILI-thanks to all of you for helping us, in so many ways, to be able to be here serving so many studentsJ We’re working on our 07-08 Budget.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We will soon begin working on our 07-08 drive so keep an eye out for our newsletter!
§         ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events: No sessions next week
§         ILI/LUHS Transition: Nothing new to report this week.
§         ILI Volunteers: Nothing to report this week.
§         ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $236,419 of our $374,055 budget.

Weekly Update

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-

§         We had a wonderful Community Meeting at LdF Grade school on Tuesday night! About 30 people were there, including some LUHS ILI students who were really awesome. We’ll be getting the minutes of that meeting out to you hopefully later today.
§         We are still trying to complete work this week on the Annual Evaluation Report that we hope to have done and printed within the next few weeks.
§         On Tuesday, Bob gave a presentation to the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation Board via a distance-learning hook-up from their Rhinelander office. We were patched in to their regional offices around the state. It was very well received and we should know in about a month if they will be supporting us again. Thanks to Leah VanZile for her support and advocacy for ILI at WPS!
§         Yesterday and today we have been trying to be computer geeks fiddling with The UW Madison Intern’s Transition Day film project! The process has become a bit complex as our IMAC isn’t quite set-up right to accomplish this easily. But we will figure it out-with the help of former ILI student Sam Kovar in Minneapolis who is coaching his software challenged dad in the process J
§         We forgot to mention last week that we presented ILI to the MHLT school board meeting which went really well. We had asked them to continue their support of ILI for next year ($5000) which they approved with strong support for our efforts. Thanks everyone at MHLT!
§         We received $20,000 this week from LUHS for the 2007-08 ILI program. A HUGE thank you once again to our partners there-they have been incredibly accommodating-allowing us to keep an office in the building (Craig and Ernie) which has really given ILI a presence within the building. We are there for both students and staff and are very thankful to have the ability to feel like a part of the school. Thank you LUHS!
§          We completed work this week on a grant application to Walgreens.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 96 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10479-thank you all very much for helping us! We will soon begin working on our 07-08 drive so keep an eye out for our newsletter!
§         ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events: No sessions next week
§         ILI/LUHS Transition: Nothing new to report this week.
§         ILI Volunteers: Nothing to report this week.

Weekly Update

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-

§         With school out we are now into our summer schedule of planning and writing curriculum for next year, fundraising and evaluation of the year just ended.
§         Alice and the UW Interns (Summer and Courtney) completed work this week on the year-end evaluation data for all of our sessions, as well as the year end surveys. We will begin compiling the data into our Annual Evaluation Report that we hope to have done and printed within the next few weeks.
§         Summer and Courtney’s project while they were here was to film and photograph the Transition Day we held on May 23 and then put together a video evaluation that we can share with the schools and our donors. It is almost complete and will be about a 10 minute or so DVD. They are doing an amazing job on it! They are both leaving us shortly and we will miss them-its amazing how quickly they both became a part of our family and made a significant contribution to our program-thanks to both of you!
§         We will finish the work on the Mentoring grant through OJJDP that is due today and get it submitted. Thanks to Beth and Woody here at GLITC for their help on writing this and to the Project partners for getting us letters of support so quickly: LUHS, LdF, AVW, MHLKT and NLES schools and the LdF Tribe’s education department. With only 2 weeks from RFP release to due date, we think we put together a great application. If we get it we will be able to pilot a district-wide mentoring program that will involve all of the partners and many community members-could be awesome!
§         We started work this week on a grant application to Walgreens.
§         ILI staff met this week continuing to work on aligning Wisconsin state academic standards with our ILI After School Curriculum that we will be submitting to the LUHS curriculum committee shortly.
§         Ernie put together an alternative schedule for the UW-LaCrosse Summer Camp this week-we’re still waiting to hear a final word from them but from most of our correspondences it sounds like a go.
§         There are two interesting articles with perspectives on the No Child Left Behind Act and schools in general we thought you might find interesting: http://www.projo.com/opinion/columnists/content/se_educationwatch03_06-03-07_PT5QQFV.24c035f.htmland http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2007-06-06-schools-main_N.htm
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 96 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10479-thank you all very much for helping us!
§         ILI In the Media: Check out the June 2007 issue of the LdF Youth News-there is a great article in there starting on page 18 that gets feedback from graduating LdF high school seniors. We’re glad to see that ILI is mentioned in positive ways! http://www.lacduflambeautribe.com/Tribal_Programs/Abinooj_page.htm.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
o        No sessions next week
§         ILI/LUHS Transition:
We are working on turning the video and pictures we took of the May 23 Transition day into a short, visual evaluation.
§         ILI Volunteers: Nothing to report this week.
§         ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $213,619 of our $374,055 budget.

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-
§         ILI staff had a mini-retreat today to reflect on the past year and think about next year after we take a deep breath this summer. Thanks to our interns Summer and Courtney-they have become an instant part of our ILI family. I’d like to thank Ernie, Craig, Alice and Matt for the outstanding job they do for our community-they are each uniquely gifted and all passionate about helping make our community and school a better place. We are so very lucky to have folks like this here in our midst and it’s a true honor, and I am extremely proud, to work with them. Thanks and chi miigwetch to each of you!!!
§         We held our final year-end party for our LUHS ILI students on Wednesday during lunch as well as After School. Twenty pizzas from Pizza Hut went fast at lunch in between laughter and visiting-what a wonderful group of students! We have a number of LUHS ILI students graduating this year-congratulations to all of you we are very proud of you!
§         We submitted funding requests this week to the HJ Hagge Foundation and the Association of American Indian Affairs for our summer UW-LaCrosse Camp.
§         We are continuing work on the Mentoring grant through OJJDP that is due June 8. Bob will be contacting our school partners next week for letters of support.
§         Alice and the UW Interns, Summer and Courtney, have been working steadily on compiling all of the ILI evals from this years sessions as well as the year-end surveys and doing data analysis that we will publish in our ILI Annual Evaluation Report. There is an awful lot of information here and they are doing a great job of reducing it all into a format that we can share with you that makes sense and is easy to read.
§         Craig has been doing research this week on evidence-based mentoring best practices that we will be using to write our mentoring grant.
§         ILI staff met on Thursday to work on aligning Wisconsin state academic standards with our ILI After School Curriculum that we will be submitting to the LUHS curriculum committee shortly.

Weekly Update

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-
§         We had an excellent Transition day on Wednesday-thanks everyone who helped make this such a success! We had two errors in our summery report: there were three students from Trinity School that attended and Sue Kutchenreuter was also there as an LUHS Freshman homeroom teacher. Our apologies for the error.
§         We submitted funding requests to Hometown Helper Foundation and the Education Dept Mentoring Grant was also submitted this week that ILI is a partnering on with LUHS, AVW and LdF schools.
§         We are starting work on another Mentoring grant through OJJDP that is due June 8.
§         We are starting work on a grant to support our UW-LaCrosse summer camp.
§         ILI staff met on Thursday to draw out the 2007-08 ILI school calendar. We had a calendar from each school that allows us to avoid days off, early releases, etc. We will be putting our final calendar together in the next week or so and get it out to the schools to approve for next year.
§         On Thursday we met with AVW Principal Casey Nye and Administrator Sue Treb to present our ILI funding request for the 2007-08 school year. We had an excellent meeting and they will be presenting our materials at the next board meeting.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 96 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10479-thank you all very much for helping us!
§         ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
o        Wednesday May 30: All LUHS ILI students and ILI Volunteers are invited to attend our end of the year lunch/party. 5a-5b lunch.
§         ILI/LUHS Transition:
Thank you everyone for an excellent transition day! The LUHS permission forms are cumbersome, and yet necessary, and we will work next year to find some creative ways to help parents get these signed earlier in the process.

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-
§         The only student ILI session we facilitated this week was the LUHS ILI session Wednesday after school session.
§         We presented our funding request on Monday to the Community Mental Health Foundation Board in Rhinelander. We had a great discussion and they have approved our $10,000 request for next school year! We would like to express our gratitude to them for being such a strong and consistent supporter of our program-since the very beginning 9 years ago-thank you!
§         On Tuesday, we submitted our 2007-08 funding request to the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation which we will be presenting at their June board meeting in Rhinelander.
§         On Wednesday we presented ILI at the Lakeland Breakfast Rotary meeting. They have been longtime supporters of ILI and we had a really good discussion on local issues and strategies with regards to student success and barriers to that success. They presented ILI with a $500 check for which we are very grateful-thank you!
§         We received $300 this week from UW-LaCrosse as an honorarium for a presentation Ernie did down there last month. Our connection with folks there are really growing-we’re looking forward to the upcoming UW-LaCrosse/ILI Summer Camp #2 in late July and early August.
§         We received word this week from Lake of the Torches that the annual golf outing of which ILI is one of the benefactors will be held towards the end of August (27th) this year instead of early June. So get your teams ready-it’s a great event with a cadre of ex-Packers and NFL greats there to play a round of golf with you.
§         Bob and Ernie met with LUHS administrator Mike Dailey Wednesday morning to discuss strategies for students in crisis-things we can do within the school/community program setting as well as ideas to advocate for in the family setting. This was a great conversation, the most exciting part being the genuine exploration and honoring of culturally appropriate strategies and time-tested methods.
§         On Thursday we met with MHLT Principal Rob Way to present our ILI funding request for the 2007-08 school year. We had an excellent meeting and Rob will be presenting our materials at the next board meeting.
§         At the Positive Alternatives Coalition Meeting held this morning, the coalition had a lengthy conversation about the community wide prevention plan meetings. We decided on a schedule of monthly action group meetings throughout the summer to be held at area schools, with specific agendas and action plans, that will lead us to a more formal community meeting in September that we hope to hold at LUHS. Bob will be sending the schedule of meetings and agendas in a separate email next week after confirming meeting locations.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are up to 96 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10479-thank you all very much for helping us!
§         ILI In the Media: There is a large article on student perception of school safety in today’s front page edition of the Lakeland Times-please check it out-there is mention of ILI in here: http://www.lakelandtimes.com/
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
o        Wednesday May 23: All area 8th grade Transition Day. LUHS School Forest. 9am-2pm.
§         ILI/LUHS After school Learning Center: The after school learning center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00pm in LUHS student services.  Mr Burley, School Counselor, will have student services open on Mondays to work with students preparing for the ACT and other students who would like to come and do schoolwork are also encouraged to be there.
§         ILI/LUHS Transition:
We had a meeting on Monday at 7:45am at LUHS to discuss the upcoming Transition day. There will be a final meeting at LUHS on Monday 5/21 at 7:45 am for all those involved in transition activities on may 23.
§         ILI Volunteers: Nothing to report this week.
§         ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $213,619 of our $374,055 budget

Weekly Update

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-
§         We facilitated our final LUHS Activity period session this week. We also facilitated the LUHS ILI session Wednesday after school.
§         We finished a number of 2007-08 school year funding requests this week: Community Mental Health Foundation and UW-LaCrosse Summer Camp proposal.
§         On Tuesday, we held our 4th Community Wide Prevention Plan meeting at Camp Jorn in Manitowish Waters. We had fewer people than the last few meetings, about 40, attend but there was an area track meet, it was a beautiful night and maybe Camp Jorn was too far away for some folks to drive to. We still had a very good meeting and we really appreciate the group of people that attended. We are making good progress-we’ll be sending out a complete recap of that meeting early next week.
§         Bob attended the DPIU AODA Advisory Council meeting in Madison on Wednesday and Thursday. Lots of good discussion-an especially interesting conversation regarding bullying policies and consequences for incidences: there was strong consensus from the Council that restorative, rather than punitive, measures were much more effective and should be applied in schools. There is also discussion of forming as statewide task force on Expulsion as the numbers of students expelled has doubled in Wisconsin over the past 10 years. The Task Force would look at the wide range of disciplinary actions schools are taking across the state for students who are “behavior problems”. The consensus of the Council was that this was a critical issue-especially for minority students across the state.
§         Bob met with Rena Beyer, CESA 9 grant writer in Madison on Thursday to discuss the Mentoring Grant being written that involves LUHS, AVW and LdF schools. ILI would be providing training to mentors if we get this award.
§         Come to LdF school today! On Friday, May 11th, from 12:15 to 3:00 p.m. there will be a HEALTH FAIR AT Lac du Flambeau Public School. Parents, students, and community members are all invited to attend the Health Fair which will include the following activities: a healthy lunch (tacos, salad bar, etc) served in the big cafeteria, door prize drawing, educational and physical activities (ILI staff will be facilitating ILI activities as one option),tables providing wellness information and health risk assessments. You can visit classrooms with health-related displays. For more information contact Sue Wolfe, LdF School at 715-588-3838, ext. 192.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We received $26 this week-including a $1 bill in one of the returned parent surveys to cover the cost of the postage!-thank you! We are up to 98 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10478, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6725 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $16000 mark so far this year!
§         ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
o        Friday May 11: LdF Health Fair. LdF School. 12:15-3pm.
o        Wednesday May 23: All area 8th grade Transition Day.
There will be a meeting at LUHS on Tuesday 7:45 am for all those involved in transition activities on may 23.
§         ILI Volunteers: Nothing to report this week.
§         ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $212,819 of our $374,055 budget.

Weekly Update

Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-Happy Easter!
§         We facilitated our final elementary ILI sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We had fewer 8th grade students than we would have liked but realize that this is a really tough time of the year for those students with LOTS going on (8th grade class trip at NLES for example). Next year we will set our schedule up better to avoid a late spring session with 8th graders. We also facilitated LUHS ILI sessions Wednesday (during and after school) as well as After School Drama rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday.
§         We finished a number of 2007-08 school year funding requests this week: LUHS school, AVW School, LdF School, and Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council.
§         On Tuesday, Bob met with LUHS Administrator Mike Dailey regarding ILI next school year at the high school. We discussed the services we have provided this year as well as our plans for next year.
§         We completed our curriculum for this coming summer’s UW-LaCrosse ILI Camp the last week of July. We did this last year and it went so well they are coming back for an extra day this time. The curriculum Ernie has put together for this year is really dynamite. The Camp is for high school students from across the state of Wisconsin and is held in part as a way to recruit high school students into college.
§         We heard this week from ILI alum Anne Johnson who continues to pursue a career that started with ILI here at home. She was recently chosen to be an intern this summer for the Nonviolent Peaceforce which is a federation based in Brussels (she’ll be at their office in Minneapolis) of over 90 Member Organizations from around the world. In partnership with local groups, unarmed Nonviolent Peaceforce Field Team members apply proven strategies to protect human rights, deter violence, and help create space for local peacemakers to carry out their work. The mission of the Nonviolent Peaceforce is to build a trained, international civilian peaceforce committed to third-party nonviolent intervention. WOW-congratulations Anne-we’re very proud of your continuing efforts to help find peace!
§         We are working with a CESA 9 grantwriter who is putting together a rather large Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant that would serve a number of our partner schools. We are discussing ways ILI and PAC activities can be included to help strengthen the proposal.
§         The Tuesday, May 8 Community Wide Prevention Plan meeting will be held at Camp Jorn in Manitowish Waters. The meeting will start at 5:30pm, hor’s d’ouevres will once again be provided by PAC at no cost to you-we appreciate you all coming! The purpose of these meetings is to encourage the community-at-large to come together to discuss a wide range of ideas, strategies, protocols and “best practices” that we would like our schools and communities to employ in the effort to keep our children healthy and vibrant. This next meeting we will focus on putting pieces of the prevention puzzle to form the beginnings of our Plan.
§         On Friday, May 11th, from 12:15 to 3:00 p.m. there will be a HEALTH FAIR AT Lac du Flambeau Public School. 192.
§         The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We received $100 this week-thank you! We are up to 97 individual members for this year so far, a total of $10453, as well as 15 business members, a total of $6725 -thank you all very much for helping us get over the $16000 mark so far this year!
§         ILI In the Media: Nothing to report this week.
§         Upcoming ILI sessions and events:
o        Tuesday May 8: Community Wide Prevention Plan Meeting. Camp Jorn. 5:30-8:30pm.
o        Wednesday May 9: LUHS ILI freshman/sophomore meeting 9:45-10:15am. LUHS ILI After School Program LUHS school.
o        Friday May 11: LdF Health Fair. LdF School. 12:15-3pm.
o        Wednesday May 23: All area 8th grade Transition Day.
We had a good meeting on Wednesday to discuss logistics and final arrangements for the upcoming Transition day on Wednesday May 23 at the LUHS school forest.
§         ILI Volunteers: Nothing to report this week.
§         ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $212,793 of our $374,055 budget.
