Friday December 22, 2006 Seasons Greetings From LUHS After School ![]() Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year!! Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week-our last weekly update until 2007! § We went to the LUHS Parent meeting at LUHS on Sunday afternoon. LUHS administration did a good job of explaining their reasoning for the lockdown last week. It was a good meeting overall, lots of good questions and comments, and everyone agreed that it was the right thing to do to err on the side of caution. We had a chance to get up and talk about ILI and some of the proactive things we are working on, like the community meetings. There is strong support for ILI, we are honored to be able to work for our community in this way. § Things seem to be calming down after last week-the biggest fallout being an awful lot of positive energy at every level we are working at for proactive change. This is a very exciting time in our community, the will seems to be there for things to seriously change. We will do whatever we can to help in a positive way to affect this change. § On Monday ILI staff met all day to process last week and discuss our strategies for the community meetings as well as our upcoming sessions. § On Tuesday we met with a number of folks from the Positive Alternatives Coalition at the LUHS ILI office to discuss the upcoming community meetings that PAC will be hosting. In attendance were Lynn Bartling of Northwoods Restorative Justice, Nancy Anne Livingston of UW-Extension, Sharon Belknap from NLES and ILI staff. We talked at length about the purpose of the meetings, the structure, when, where and how we are going to get the word out. Craig proposed a very profound process of acknowledging our fears, communication, feedback, answering questions and then going on to the next set of questions. We will be sending out an open letter inviting people to the meetings-the first one being at 5:30pm Tuesday January 16 at the Lac du Flambeau multi-purpose building in LdF (across from the Baptist Church on Hwy 47). We will serve dinner. This was a great meeting. § On Tuesday, a special meeting of the LUHS ILI students interested in producing a play for the rest of the school occurred after school. It is really cool that these students are so committed. They have recruited over 50 students already for different jobs: actors, lighting, sound, script writing. This is going to be really good. § On Wednesday we hosted a breakfast meeting for all of the area school principals. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the new 7th and 8th grade structure of 5 students from each school/day for 4 days in a week. We wanted to try this approach in order to have smaller groups that we could actively take them through discussions of the real issues affecting our community with regards to race, culture, conflict and history. All of the principals agreed to let us try this. We also had a great conversation on what the issues are facing us as well as possible solutions. It was really encouraging to hear some exciting new ideas along with some very different thinking regarding how we should be delivering education in the very near future. We are very hopeful that some of these ideas might be implemented in the near future, the principals have some great ideas. § On Wednesday morning we hosted a LUHS junior/senior ILI meeting. Over the lunch periods, we hosted an ILI xmas party with stacks of pizza, lots of fun and plenty of smiles. Late on Wednesday we had another xmas party for the after school group. § We found out on Tuesday that we will be receiving an award from the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families for our work with children. We will be given the award at their 125th anniversary celebration in Madison on January 24. There will be over 500 people there! This is a real honor, especially since we were nominated by Wisconsin Indian Education Association President Michele LaRock. Thanks everyone for having faith in us! § We also talked with Kurt Griesemer of the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board in Madison, they want to do a television report on what our students are doing here at LUHS. The kids are really excited about this! § We received $100 this week from the Ascension Lutheran Church in Minocqua. They have supported us for years and we are very grateful for their continued support! Thank you! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We received $300 in donations this week from the Friends of ILI mailing-thank you all very much! § ILI In the Media: § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: § Nothing next week-happy holidays! § ILI/LUHS After school Learning Center: The after school learning center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00pm in LUHS student services. Mr Burley, School Counselor, will have student services open on Mondays to work with students preparing for the ACT and other students who would like to come and do schoolwork are also encouraged to be there. § ILI/LUHS Transition: The date proposed for the Spring All Area 8th Grade Transition day is Wednesday May 23, 2007 in the LUHS school forest. § ILI Volunteers: Thanks you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make our sessions and our program such a success this past year! Happy holiday wishes to all of you from all of us here at ILIJ § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI staff is now on our second 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $190,519 of our $374,055 budget. § FOR MORE INFORMATION!! Director Friday December 15, 2006 Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI! § The lock-down at LUHS was the big event of this week, and our efforts to try and help get information out, dispel rumors and find ways to help us all move forward in a positive direction from all this. Our primary concern this week was to help in any way we could to help students heal and process their feelings. There is another LUHS informational meeting on Sunday December 17 at 1:00pm in the auditorium for those of you who are interested. We continue to receive many emails from so many folks, we thank you all for your words of encouragement and interest in wanting to help us find solutions. We are planning a series of community meetings, with the support of the Positive Alternatives Coalition that will begin shortly after the holidays. We are working on logistics, details an structure of these meetings over the next few days and we expect to have the details for you by the end of next week at the latest. These meetings will be opportunities for us to move forward as a community, identifying best practices and resources that we feel should be implemented to improve success for all students. § On Tuesday we met with the Lakeland Area Ministerial Association at their meeting that was held in Lac du Flambeau. They had invited us to their meeting because they wanted to ask for our help in starting an ILI-like adult program in the area. We had a great meeting with them, Ernie led the group through some ILI activities to illustrate how we might bring adults together and build the group so we can work together as one. He did an activity called the “String of Pearls”, an activity where participants build a story, one person at a time. One person stands up and makes up some words and maybe a movement. Others then join in one at a time either in front of or behind this person. The “story” gets retold each time a new person adds their portion. They sure had fun and lots of great comments afterwards. One lady said: "That story we built, that said it all. That is exactly what we have to do. Together we build the story." We will be working with the Ministerial Assoc to see if their churches might house the community meetings we are talking about starting. After the lock-down on Wednesday, it seemed that maybe these community meetings and the adult ILI idea could become one. § We received $5000 this week from the Howard Young HealthCare Foundation. They have supported ILI since our beginning and we are so appreciative of their continued support and advocacy for our efforts. Thank you! § We also received $1000 from the Community Presbyterian Church of Lac du Flambeau, another longtime supporter of ILI-thank you! § We also received $100 from the Manitowish Waters Lions Club. They have also supported ILI for many years and we are very grateful, thank you! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We received $100 in donations this week from the Friends of ILI mailing-thank you all very much! § ILI In the Media: We were contacted by a number of media outlets this week, unfortunately most of them were contacting us looking to add to the negativity of the situation this week. Since we see our role as peacemakers in the community, we politely told them that if they wanted to interview us regarding the positive things we are trying to do in the community that would be great. So far the only folks that have responded are WOJB-FM radio. We are going to be interviewed on their station (88.9) tomorrow sometime around 10:15am. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: § Wednesday December 20: LUHS Junior/Senior Meeting 9:40-10:10-Multi-purpose Room. ILI Xmas lunch for freshman-seniors 5a-5B. LUHS ILI Afterschool Leadership program 3:45-5:45 LUHS. § ILI Volunteers: Thanks you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped at our sessions this week!! § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI staff is now on our second 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. Director Friday December 8, 2006 Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI! § This was a busy week-our second set of 4th grade sessions were held at Camp Jorn. ILI staff met all day Tuesday to discuss 7th and 8th grade session plans for January. We also hosted our Wednesday activity period and After School sessions. § We are quite excited about designing the new ILI 7th and 8th grade sessions. Bob has set up meetings with almost all of the school principals for next week to discuss our logistic options. What we can agree on will affect our curricular options, but regardless we are designing our next sessions to actively help students address the real issues that seem to be causing problems for students in the high school. § We heard from Patty Loew from Madison reminding us that they are still planning on hosting a Star Conference here during the Wisconsin Indian Education Association Conference in April. We talked with her last spring about the possibility of having our Culture Fair coincide with this event so students can attend. Patty is collaborating with folks from the UW Madison Space Science and Engineering Outreach to produce a program that looks at the stars from different perspectives. This should be a great event! § The Lake of the Torches Resort and Casino presented ILI a check for $1000 on Friday. These funds came from the Sports Show and Memorabilia event they held a few months ago that was a benefit for ILI. Ernie and Matt accepted the check on behalf of ILI and we are extremely grateful to LOTC for all of their support and continued efforts to help ILI remain strong in the area. Thank you! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We received $169 in donations this week from the Friends of ILI mailing-thank you all very much! § ILI In the Media: nothing this week § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: § Wednesday December 13: LUHS freshman/sophomore Meeting 9:40-10:10-Multi-purpose Room. LUHS ILI Afterschool Leadership program 3:45-5:45 LUHS. § ILI/LUHS After school Learning Center: The after school learning center is open Tuesday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00pm in LUHS student services. Director Friday December 1, 2006 Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI! § ILI staff continues to meet working on various projects- curriculum for the After School Program still being a priority. This is taking us longer than we expected as we get deeper into it, we are trying to be thorough and innovative with it. We met this week as well to discuss plans for our 4th grade sessions next week. § With the help of MANY of you out there in the community, we have had much discussion on the formats of our 7th and 8th grade sessions coming up the end of January. In light of the recent increase in violence in the high school, we have decided that we need to be much more deliberate in our attempts with these students to provide opportunities for them to discuss the issues and how they become manifested in the high school. We are going to be talking with each of the grade school principals in the next week or two to ask them to consider our new plan. We would very much like to have small groups of students for 7th and 8th grade students so we can concentrate our resources more effectively in a group setting that is manageable and workable. Currently we have as many as 65 students in a day session-we want to change that to 20 if possible and no more than 40, depending on what the schools will agree to. We also want all 4 schools coming together each day-this would represent how real life in the high school will be. The best scenario for us to accomplish helping students understand the real issues, and giving them the opportunities to have their real questions answered, would be for us to have 5 students from each school come each day. This means we will be asking the schools if they would be willing to send a different group of 5 students from 7th grade a day for days in a row. Same for 8th grade. We would have 20 students a day and could really get into some interesting learning opportunities. We are talking about using role playing, mock scenarios, and other methods to help students understand race issues, conflict resolution, anger issues, the power of rumors and peer pressure, and much more. We are willing to discuss transportation issues and costs with the schools for this change in session structure. There are details and logistics to work out, but we need to try this approach if our community truly wants to help us help students find some real solutions to the violence that is damaging, dangerous, senseless and in the end, mostly avoidable with the right kind of pro-active prevention measures in place. We’ll keep you posted on how this develops, we’re very excited about the possibilities. Just a note of clarification-this change is for 7th and 8th grade ILIO students only-we will continue to run our 4th-6th grade ILI sessions as we have been. § We held our LUHS sessions on Wednesday. There are some great things happening in the after school group-we are able to discuss openly and frankly school violence issues and how to avoid them. The most powerful message we heard this week: when asked why they are avoiding getting involved in conflicts, these students said they did not want to be involved in violence-not because of the consequences they know exist-but because they did not want to come back into our group and have to explain why they did something they know we are all trying to work against. They didn’t want to let the rest of the group down by making poor choices, and by so doing they have placed higher expectations on their actions. These students are definitely “getting it”. Our hope is that we can provide them with enough skills so they can cope “in the moment” without the support of our group around. We’re awfully proud of these students! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: The donations continue to come in from our recent Friends of ILI mailing-thank you! We received $1530 from Friends of ILI donors the past 2 weeks-thank you!! § ILI In the Media: nothing this week § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: § Monday December 4: LdF/AVW(saykally/berryman) 4th Grade at Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. § Tuesdsay December 5: LdF/NLES 4th Grade at Camp Jorn. 9am-2pm. § Wednesday December 6: LUHS freshman/sophomore Meeting 9:40-10:10-Multi-purpose Room. Mr Burley, School Counselor, will have student services open on Mondays to work with students preparing for the ACT and other students who would like to come and do schoolwork are also encouraged to be there. § ILI/LUHS Transition: We met yesterday at LUHS and discussed a few issues, including the changes in format for the ILI 7th and 8th grade sessions. The date proposed for the Spring All Area 8th Grade Transition day is Wednesday May 23, 2007 in the LUHS school forest. § ILI Volunteers: next week 4th grade sessions at Camp Jorn-help to serve lunch (10:45-12:30) § Monday Dec. 4: John and Gretchen Spickerman § Tuesday Dec. 5: Joyce Barnes, Dick and Joan Fahning § Thursday Dec 7: Jeanne Olp, Dick and Joan Fahning § Friday Dec 8: Pam Anthony, John and Gretchen Spickerman § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI staff is now on our second 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $183,200 of our $374,055 budget. § FOR MORE INFORMATION!! Director Friday November 17, 2006 Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI-we won’t be sending an update out next week but will resume again in two weeks-Happy Thanksgiving everyone! § ILI staff continues to meet working on various projects-curriculum for the After School Program being a priority. We met this week as well to discuss options for our 7th & 8th grade session formats and we have some interesting ideas in the mix. Thank you to the teachers and students who have given us direction and guidance-we’ll be rolling these ideas out hopefully at our next set of sessions that begin the end of January (for 7th and 8th grade). § To further address this issue, we met on Tuesday for a few hours with ILI Volunteers here at GLITC to give them an opportunity to give us their ideas and suggestions. We are very lucky to have such passionate volunteers-these folks have a very strong commitment to ILI and we highly value their input. At the end of the meeting they said it was more a time for them learning about the real issues instead of offering ideas. But they had some great suggestions as well. They asked lots of questions, listened, made suggestions, and encouraged us in the work we do with the kids. We talked about which students are sent to ILI and why, what happens to kids and sports opportunities in the high school, the impact of 'no child left behind' and the time we spent with students after the last 8th grade session seeking their input on how to improve their sessions. Some of their suggestions were: *Make ILI mandatory for all students and teachers *work with the teachers to reach the few kids who don't want to come *use high school students to work with 8th graders (i.e. social gathering) *make it more educational so teachers will see more value in it (cooperative learning) *teach Tribal government in ILI *hold a teacher in-service about ILI *teach a class where teachers could receive credit about ILI *provide teachers with reading materials to educate them and their students regarding race, culture and diversity. *hands-on sessions for 8th grade *have school principals encourage their teachers to encourage students to come *Contact graduates from ILI to hear how it has impacted them in their life after high school Some of their Comments: *We need to provide more time for talking with kids. *We need to recognize the reality of the impact that ILI students have in the community and on their peers for their involvement in ILI and other activities. *There needs to be more emphasis overall in society on improving human relations *Volunteers expressed interest in being more involved at sessions with the students. They want to help out. Asked if there is anything else they can do to help. Thank you all for attending and for your help and insight!! § We held our LUHS sessions on Wednesday. A clarification regarding Restorative Justice-we used the word “retribution” in describing the restorative process in the Wednesday after school summary. That was not the right word to use. To restore means first to put back in harmony. Same as peace, to bring harmony and balance. Peacekeeping and Restorative Justice are all about peace and harmony. The adversarial system is designed to react after something happens. Often, even Restorative Justice only comes into play after an incident occurs. We want to use Restorative Justice to bring harmony, to restore it. What we want people to learn is that we need to intervene, to work to maintain peace and harmony before things happen. Restorative Justice, Peacekeeping, is not about punishment or retribution, and this process gives us a multitude of tools to use compared to the very few involved in strictly punitive systems. § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: The donations continue to come in from our recent Friends of ILI mailing-thank you! We received $440 from Friends of ILI donors this week-thank you!! § ILI In the Media: nothing this week § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: §

Director Friday November 10, 2006 Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI- § ILI staff met almost each day this week to continue work on our syllabus and outline for the After School curriculum. It is an incredibly interesting process as it is forcing us to take all of our ideas and integrate them into a succinct curriculum. This is taking longer than we had hoped but the process is very energizing and worthwhile. It is giving us great focus and we are beginning to see new directions for our 7th and 8th grade sessions as we go through this process-so it is a very worthwhile exercise. We’re almost there-but still have some interesting work to accomplish! § We held our LUHS sessions on Wednesday. § We were denied our application to Oneida County Safe and Stable Families that we had submitted at the end of September. We’ll try again next year! § We received $1000 this week from the Wisconsin Indian Education Association-they have supported us for quite a few years and we are very thankful to this group for their generous donation. Director Friday November 3, 2006 Here’s what’s been going on this week in ILI- § First, we’d like to start off with some apologies this week-our “Friends of ILI” newsletter just mailed mistakenly overlooks two very important “in-kind” supporters of ILI from the 2005-06 school year. Camp Nawakwa in Lac du Flambeau hosted our year-end 4th grade overnite between LdF and AVW grade schools. They invited us to use their cabins and facilities at no cost to our program and their hospitality was great. Camp Nawakwa Director Kirby Peterson has been doing an excellent job over the past few years trying to offer Nawakwa as a community resource and our apologies for not recognizing these efforts in our newletter. Secondly, Lisa Steiner, former assistant principal at LUHS, is the developer of our ILI website over the past few years. She maintains the site, updates it weekly and has done an outstanding job of keeping it fresh and interesting. She is under contract with ILI, but her and her husband Ron spend many, many “in-kind” hours keeping this site in excellent shape. Our apologies for not having this noted in our newsletter. We genuinely appreciate everyone’s help! § ILI staff met this week mainly working on finishing the After School Leadership Program syllabus-we will be taking to LUHS administrators next week. We are also working hard to change the way we are going to manage our 7th and 8th grade sessions. Matt, Craig and Alice are attending a conference in Minneapolis today and through the weekend looking for some new strategies and approaches. § We held our LUHS sessions on Wednesday. § We were contacted this week by JP Leary at DPI to see if we wanted to participate in an interesting project. Kurt Greisemer, co-director on the video series Democracy It Is! (Wisconsin Educational Communication Board) has been searching for stories revolving around American Indian youth initiatives or councils. The point of their series is to show young people engaged in their communities (in the largest sense), working for change, creating opportunities, or simply trying to make things better. We’re going to connect our LUHS ILI students with them and see where this all goes-this hould be an interesting experience for our students! § The Howard Young health Care Foundation Board has committed $5000 to ILI for this school year. We gave a presentation there a few weeks ago. They are also going to work with us to write a grant to the Ministry Health Care Pooled Fund for further funding. Plus, they are going to feature ILI in their annual report this year, an award winning publication that goes out to thousands of people! A huge thank you to them for their support and advocacy for our efforts! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: The donations are coming in fast from our recent Friends of ILI mailing-thank you!
