Happy Holidays Everyone-we’ll See you in two weeks Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § Looking for something to do over break with your kids and family? There is going to be a “Winter Fun Day” at the Indian Bowl in Lac du Flambeau on Thursday December 27 from 1pm-9pm. Sledding, skating, food, games, music and more! For more information call Pat at the LdF Family Resource Center: 588-1511 § On Monday evening we presented a letter to the LUHS School Board introducing the Lakeland Area Community group and our efforts over the past 14 months. We had an opportunity to discuss the four core issues of concern and action that the group would like to pursue in the future. We spoke for only a few minutes but it seemed like we were well received. Thanks everyone who made it to the meeting to show their support-it is a great beginning! § ILI staff worked this week on preparing for the next set of sessions beginning after break. We have 7th and 8th grade plans completed-its going to be really good as there is lots to build on from the sessions we just completed. § On Thursday we met with AVW principal Steve Holt and teachers Linn White and Jeremy Jorgenson who had some excellent ideas and suggestions for future sessions. We also talked briefly about some options for delivering ILI in the future. Most schools have growing concerns of students being out of their buildings with the increased focus on testing and academic achievement. We’re hoping that as a community we can agree that the need to nurture the social emotional side of our children is as important and that we can find a way to continue this really cool partnership that is now in its 10th year. ILI staff has always been flexible and creative and we’re working on some ideas that we will begin discussing with the schools this spring. § We had an excellent meeting on Thursday also with LUHS Principal Todd Kleinhans. We discussed ways to improve and speed up the communications with ILI staff in the event of a student behavioral issue. Todd is very interested in being able to offer students and families more options in these cases. We identified a process to follow in particular for referrals of students into the LdF Men’s and Women’s Circles that Ernie has helped initiate. These Circles have been formed to help heal in traditional ways-not as a form of punishment or as a consequence of a behavior (LUHS has policies for this), but more of an opportunity to heal the deeper issues that may have led to the behavior so that it doesn’t happen again. We’re really excited about being able to help students resolve issues in a healing way-an option that doesn’t exist if we are purely punitive in our responses to negative behaviors. There has already been great success with this process and it was important that we sat down to formalize the process so students and parents understood what it was all about. § We have been asked by LUHS administration to help intervene with 3 students this week and another student by the Rotary Club. Its great having an office in the high school so we can be there as student issues arise to help. § We are working on three funding requests: Honor the Earth (due Jan 15), Ringing Rocks Foundation (Feb 1), and Jimmy Buffet’s Foundation. § We received $2500 this week, our third installment of a grant we received last spring from the Wisconsin Community Fund in Madison. Thanks for your continued support! § We received $500 from the Friends of ILI this week! Thanks you SO MUCH to everyone!! § ILI In the Media: A very active news cycle in today’s Lakeland Times regarding LUHS. There is also a nice article about the LdF Tribe supporting ILI over the years. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday January 3, 2008: LUHS Activity Period. Freshman/sophomore. 9”45am-10:15am. Multi-purpose Room LUHS. o Wednesday January 3, 2008: LUHS After School Leadership. ILI Office. 3:45-5:45pm. § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting scheduled for March 26, 2007 at 4:00pm. LUHS school conference room. § ILI Volunteers: § A special Happy Holidays to all of our wonderful ILI Volunteers-you are all terrific! ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $370325.56 of our $374,055 budget. § FOR

ILI this week-
§ We met with the Lakeland Area Community group and Mike Dailey this week to discuss our efforts over the past 14 months. It was a really good meeting! Mike invited us to attend the LUHS school Board meeting Monday Dec. 17 at 5:00pm to speak about our efforts and to present a letter to the Board offering our help with the selection process on interview panels for the new superintendent. Please attend this meeting if you want to show support for the efforts at all these meetings. We will meet in the commons area at 4:30 to sign the letter. § We are applying to bring 4 LUHS ILI students to a Native Youth Leadership Camp over spring break. The Camp is in Louisiana with all expenses paid for 4 students and two adult chaperones (Matt and Alice)! Its pretty competitive so we’ll have to see what happens but it sure sounds cool! § We were very honored this week to hear that Jeaninne Bruguier, Education Director for the Lac du Flambeau Tribe is nominating ILI for The Harvard Project On American Indian Economic Development Honoring Nations Award. This is an award that recognizes best practices and helps spread the word about them. Thanks so much Jeaninne-Pretty cool! § We worked this week on getting funding requests out to churches, businesses and service clubs-18 of them! § We completed a funding request this week to the LdF WITCAPP AODA coalition. This is a new coalition formed in LdF with the monies from the SPF SIG grant we helped bring to the Tribes last year. § We started working on a request to Jimmy Buffet’s Foundation this week. § We received $2500 this week, our third installment of a grant we received last spring from the Wisconsin Community Fund in Madison. Thanks for your continued support! § We received $300 from the Friends of ILI this week! Thanks you SO MUCH to everyone!! § ILI In the Media: We were pleased to read that the December 7 Lakeland Times article about the Bowman study at LUHS mentioned ILI as one of the programs that had a “positive impact” at the school. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday December 19, 2007: LUHS Activity Period. Junior/Senior. 9”45am-10:15am. Multi-purpose Room LUHS. § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting scheduled for March 26, 2007 at 4:00pm. LUHS school conference room. § ILI Volunteers: § ILI volunteers are helping with session evals-this is a tedious task and we really appereciate all of your help! § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $369,825.56 of our $374,055 budget. § FOR

Intercultural Leadership Initiative 2007-2008 Weekly Update Friday November 30, 2007 Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § We delivered Session One programming to 7th grade students Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Excellent sessions! (see our summaries). § We have been working around the clock to complete an evaluation grant application to the Center For Applied Prevention Technologies. We are one of only 10 programs in their 12 state region to be eligible to apply for a $30,000 grant to enhance our evaluation capacity. It’s a tough application but we’re getting there. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us out with their letters of commitment! Its due next week. § The next community meeting will be held Tuesday December 4, 2007 at the Wellness Center in LdF. 5:30-8:00pm. § The Lakeland Transition Committee met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss transition activities for this year. We talked about LUHS visits to the schools for orientation of 8th grade students and their parents, registration for classes, release of student records between schools and other items. Most importantly for ILI, the 8th Grade May Transition Day was set for Wednesday May 21, 2008! § On Wednesday we met with the Lakeland Citizenship Committee. We had further discussions regarding a mission statement for LUHS that would be the preface and the foundation for the student handbook. We are looking at some options for developing this as well as how developing the citizenship plan fits in to our discussions. § On Thursday morning we presented ILI and our funding request for the 07-08 year to the Howard Young Healthcare Foundation Board. HYHC was our first large grantor and were responsible for helping us get the traction to get us where we are today! § Peggy McIntosh, director of the SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project has been invited by LUHS school to speak to interested LUHS staff during their lunch periods on January 22. She will be here along with Ernie as part of a program co-sponsored by ILI to discuss White Privilege and other equity issues. § Looking for another way to help fund ILI? Try the search engine www.goodsearch.com next time you are cruising the web. Each search raises a few cents for ILI. We've been using it for stuff here at work with looking up all the data online. We have about $10 at this point. Also, buying products thru their search engine is another way that people can choose to help raise money for ILI. § We received numerous donations from organizations and businesses the past two week: Marshfield Clinic $2500; North Lakeland PTC $1000; Manitowish waters Lions Club $200; Folsom Farms Inc. $100, Sachari Lodge $100; and Sobek Architects $50. This
is our last update for two
weeks-Happy Thanksgiving
everybody!!
Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § ILI staff continued working on defining our goals, objectives, outcomes and evaluation tools in preparation for the CAPT Eval Grant that we are writing that is due December 7. We have really focused in on our process so its been a really worthwhile effort. § The next community meeting will be held Tuesday December 4, 2007 at the Wellness Center in LdF. 5:30-8:00pm. § We received a call this week from Anna Kazda of the Wisconsin DNR's Diversity Team, who was very impressed with our program when their team met with us last fall at LUHS for one of our sessions. The Northern Region's Diversity Team is interested in giving presentations or doing outreach to students to promote their interest in working with the DNR. According to Anna, by 2012, the Baby Boomers will mostly be retired, and there will be a worker shortage, and they would like to get students interested in working there. We’ll be working with them to see how we can effectively connect our students with them. § We had a great meeting with Fred Maulson of GLIFWC on Thursday morning. Fred and Mike MacKenzie of the WI DNR have met with us before to discuss opportunities to share their wonderful story of collaboration with ILI students at the same time as educating them about tribal and state natural resource laws and issues. You may have heard on the news today that a big step toward equality between state and tribal peace officers has been reached as Governor Jim Doyle signed a bill that would equalize the power of law enforcement officers between GLIFWC and DNR officers. The new law gives deputies and wardens of the Great Lakes Indian and Wildlife Commission the same rights as other Wisconsin law enforcement officers. GLIFWC Director Jim Zorn says “the bill is proof that the state and tribes have come a long way since violence over treaty rights in the late 1980s.” He says, “it’s an important recognition that GLIFWC’s officers are just as important as any other officers in the state.” We have no doubt that the kind of collaboration developed through the hard work of Fred and Mike played a key role in this all happening. The real exciting part for ILI is that they are willing to bring that kind of commitment to education and understanding collaboration to ILI students in our sessions this year. We talked with Fred about opportunities for our 5th and 6th grade sessions this winter to learn about natural resource laws, issues and enforcement, from both the Tribal and the State perspective, as a way to bring students together. This is a great opportunity for our students. We talked about some ideas to bring this to groups of adults as well. Finally, we talked about having summer camps for 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade students at a camp up they run in the Ottawa National Forest. Exciting stuff! § We completed an article about ILI for the December/January T-Bird Newsletter to parents. Another way to communicate about our efforts is always welcome! § We received $1424 from the Friends of ILI this week-including 7 brand new donors to ILI which were very excited about. Thanks you SO MUCH to everyone for your prompt response as we know the newsletters just landed in your mailboxes this week! § ILI In the Media: nothing to report this week. § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o No sessions next week-Happy Thanksgiving! § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting scheduled for November 27, 2007 at 4:00pm. LUHS school conference room. § ILI Volunteers: Volunteers continue to work on our ILI Permission Forms… § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. Here’s what has been going on in ILI this week- § The Friends of ILI newsletter is FINALLY on its way to you! If for some reason you don’t receive one in the mail in the next week or so and want one-please let us know. We thank you in advance for considering a donation to aid our efforts! § ILI staff spent most of the week working on defining our goals, objectives, outcomes and evaluation tools in preparation for the CAPT Eval Grant that we are writing that is due December 7. This is a very arduous process but well worth the effort. We have done this before but not for awhile and it is really helping us focus on being able to effectively communicate what we are trying to accomplish with all of the component programs and efforts of ILI in the schools and community. We are also identifying what eval tools we are missing, which is what this grant could help us develop should we receive it. § The next community meeting will be held Tuesday December 4, 2007 at the Wellness Center in LdF. 5:30-8:00pm. § We received official notice this week that our Mentoring Grant application we made last summer to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention was denied. We were very disappointed to hear this but will get the reviewer feedback and try again next year-and keep trying until we get it! § We received $25000 this week from the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council. They have consistently been a very strong supporter of ILI and we are extremely grateful for their faith in our efforts. Chi Miigwetch! § We received $5000 this week from AVW Grade school, also a longtime supporter of our efforts and we’re very thankful for their continued generosity-thank you! § ILI In the Media: There’s a nice feature in this month’s Lac du Flambeau Abinoojiyag Center Youth News about ILI student Jasmine Deragon who was chosen as an LUHS “Student of the Month”. There’s also a picture of ILI staff receiving a check from the Lake of the Torches Golf Classic Benefit that was held in August. Also, LUHS ILI student Larissa LaBarge was chosen as Kiwanis Student of the Month and there’s a nice picture of her in the Nov. 2 issue of the Lakeland Times. There’s also nice story about the 6th Grade Conference that ILI staff helped facilitate at camp Jorn the end of September in the November issue of the Lac du Flambeau News along with a picture of ILI staff receiving a check from the Chippewa Valley Bank in Lac du Flambeau AND another article in there about the 7 LdF eighth graders (and ILI students!) that Cathy Kurtyka helped attend the weeklong engineering camp this past summer at UW-Madison. ILI students who go out into the community and demonstrate what we are trying teach them make us incredibly proud! Please make sure that you give all of these wonderful students a pat on the back next time you see them-they are great role models! § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday November 14: LUHS Activity Period. LUHS Multi-Purpose Room. 9:45-10:15am. o Wednesday November 14: After School Leadership: LUHS ILI Office. 3:45-5:45pm. § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting scheduled for November 27, 2007 at 4:00pm. LUHS school conference room. § ILI Volunteers: We have mailed out the parent permission forms to those of you who have volunteered to help us collate the data from them. We’re hoping to get this done prior to the upcoming 7th grade sessions. § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $356,622.56 of our $374,055 budget. § FOR MORE INFORMATION and the latest session calendar please check the ILI website at www.ilileadership.org. Bob Kovar, Project

Here’s
what has been going on in
ILI this week-
§ We heard from ILI alum Lawrence Mann this week-he is applying for a job as the Manager of Diversity Relations at the Forest County Potawatomi Bingo and Casino in Milwaukee. Many of you remember Lawrence as the young man who nearly single-handedly pulled together the Cultural Fair at LUHS school a few years ago while he was a student here. His leadership style was so evident even then as was his interest in bringing people together. We had the honor of writing him a letter of reference for this new opportunity. Its really exciting when students go on to careers that may have been sparked in part by their time here in ILI. We’re all so proud of him and wish him the best of luck-GO Lawrence! § On Monday ILI staff met with ILI Volunteers to discuss some current opportunities for help that we need. They will be helping us organize all of our Parent Permission Forms, sorting through the various checkmarks so that we don’t miss anything. This will also enable us to call parents prior to upcoming sessions who have checked off that they would like to chaperone or volunteer in some way at their child’s ILI session. What a great group of volunteers we have! § ILI staff continues to work on the planning for the 7th and 8th grade upcoming sessions. We are going to be challenging students in a different way during these sessions, making their day fun but also very meaningful. We are focusing on conflict resolution skill building and are working on some ideas to create role playing to model these concepts. Should be interesting and more relevant for these students. § On Thursday Bob met with Julie Thompson, Administrator at Marshfield Clinic to deliver a funding request proposal and discuss ILI with her. They have been strong supporters of ILI for many years and her board will be meeting in the next few weeks to discuss our request. § We sent in a funding request to the LdF Chippewa Housing Authority this week and will be making a presentation to their Board in a few weeks. § We have begun work on an RFP through Central CAPT. This is an evaluation grant that we are eligible to apply for since we were invited to the Service To Science Academy in Minneapolis last spring. This is a $30,000 grant and we are looking at it to help build our evaluation capacity and tools to measure the effects of ILI on students and the community. § The next community meeting will be held Tuesday December 4, 2007 at the Wellness Center in LdF. 5:30-8:00pm. § The Friends of ILI newsletter is still in Eagle River at the printer. They had a very large job to complete this week and will be starting on our job Monday-so it should finally be in the mail by the end of next week. § We received $500 this week from the LdF Lions Club, $5000 from MHLT school and $15000 from LdF School-they have all continued to support us over the years and we are truly grateful for their faith in our efforts, thank you all so much! § The “Friends of ILI” membership drive: We are done with our 07-08 membership drive newsletter. This should be in the mail by the end of next week. Really! § ILI In the Media: There was a great article in last Friday’s Lakeland Times about the LdF and NLES grade school football team that merged this year. A nice paragraph in there about how ILI helped them get to know each other and that they brought it all to another level during their season together. Kudos to both LdF and NLES school officials who had the vision to bring these teams together as one-what a great experience for both the kids and their parents! § Upcoming ILI sessions and events: o Wednesday November 7: LUHS Activity Period. LUHS Multi-Purpose Room. 9:45-10:15am. o Wednesday November 7: After School Leadership: LUHS ILI Office. 3:45-5:45pm. § ILI/LUHS Transition: Next meeting scheduled for November 27, 2007 at 4:00pm. LUHS school conference room. § ILI Volunteers: Thanks everyone for chipping in to help us get our permission forms organized! § ILI Annual Fundraising: ILI currently runs on a 2-year budget cycle. We have a two-year budget in order to keep our focus on the importance of sustaining our project beyond one year at a time. We currently have raised $326,622.56 of our $374,055 budget. § FOR MORE INFORMATION and the latest session calendar please check the ILI website at www.ilileadership.org. Bob Kovar, Project
